About the Author
Cat Saunders, Ph.D., is a longtime counselor, death doula, and nonsectarian minister. She is the author of "Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook: A Compassionate Guide for Being Human" and more than 200 articles and interviews, which have been reprinted around the world. Since the early 1970s, Cat has studied a wide array of therapeutic methods, body work and breathing techniques, cross-cultural spiritual disciplines, and creative healing modalities, including art therapy and ecstatic dance. Her doctoral research focused on the "missing link" related to eating disorders and functional neurology. Since 1985, Cat has maintained a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she works with individuals, couples, families, groups, and small businesses. She also does personal and professional consultation via email and telephone for clients worldwide. Cat has been interviewed on radio and television regarding her anger-work techniques, her series of articles on death, and her role as a death doula and coma worker. In addition, Cat's lifelong devotion to interdisciplinary forms of prayer led her to found Rent-A-Monk, which makes certain aspects of her spiritual work available to others. It's a book about accepting and loving yourself. My favorite parts include the practical tips and methods on improving one's well-being. Here are some of my favorite methods Dr. Cat include the coin flip method, 5 minute method and the pretend method. With these simple tips, I found it quick and easy to get desired outcomes without delving into complicated theory.
Interspersed within the book, we get a frank glimpse into her own life. Just like Oprah, Dr. Cat shares that she's like one of us -- filled with the same challenges, struggles and anxieties that we all share. With her thoughtful introspection and detailed research, she's a strong leader, coach and counselor that we can all count on.
It is rich with practical ideas. Dr. Cat's chapters are short and to the point. Her basic message is be compassionate with yourself and to take good care of yourself. She shows us how to do exactly that. A wide variety of topics make this handbook a treasure. Included are an emergency plan for anger overload, the gratitude cleanup list, relating with respect, and many others. I especially like her collection of the brilliant quotes she has scattered throughout the book. Recommended for learning to take gentle care of a human being, you!
