Unlike a lot of other cleansers, I do find that I need to use a little more of this stuff than most. Not a lot, but just a little more than a small squirt. Right away, you can feel that this probably has a heavy oil base which is what helps to soften and melt away the oils in your make-up, as well as old sebum on your skin. I can't see anything listed that it might be, but you will definitely feel that it's very moisturizing.
Apparently, based on their video, you can use this without water, but in most circumstances, I personally prefer to use it with water, at least to help rinse away everything. That works well for me, especially in conjunction with a make-up removing pad. Because it does have such an oily feeling, even though it's a cream, I do need to use a make-up pad to make sure that all is rinsed away. I have combination skin and really don't want anything left behind for fear of clogging my pores.
Once all is done, my skin feels very soft and smooth, as well as nice and moisturized. If I really had to, I could use this and not even follow up with any moisturizers if the need required. It does work well with following up with other skincare products though.
It's fine every so often for my combination skin, but it seems best for those with normal to dry skin. Also good for all skin types when you have a lot of make-up and other gunk layered all over your face that needs a good cleaning away. For those with oily skin, I think you may really need to follow up with a good deeply clarifying toner just to make sure you have the proper ph balance on your skin.
At $30 (today's price) for 5 ounces, I find that it's a bit high priced, but might work well enough for you. Might be worth it if you need something to take with you for quick clean ups without the benefit of your home sink area.
I use a 2 step cleansing method. This is called a “Meltaway Cleanser,” and is described as an “oil-free hydrating, makeup removing cleanser.” For that reason, I decided I’d use this as the first step in my cleansing process. Usually, the first step in my 2 step cleanse is a makeup removing oil or balm. I like to use them to kind of melt the makeup away, then I rinse it off and use a standard face wash. So, that’s why I decided to use this as the first step, since it was described as a “makeup removing cleanser.” I liked this a lot as the first step in my cleansing process. It melted makeup away really well. It even got my eyeliner and mascara off easily without having to scrub or tug at my eyes, which I love. It also felt really moisturizing on the skin. It didn’t dry out or make my skin feel stripped at all. My skin felt soft and moisturized after using it.
I decided to also try this as the second step in my cleansing process and use this as my standard face wash. For me, when it comes to my standard face wash, I like foam and/or suds. I don’t know, I just feel like with foam and/or suds, I see where it’s at. a cleanser like this, I can see it for the most part, but just not well enough for me to be sure I got every area cleansed evenly. Since I use a 2 step cleansing method, I feel my face was clean. But, I just prefer my foam/suds. When using this as the second step in my 2 step cleansing method, I don’t think I felt like my face was clean because of this cleanser. I felt like it was clean because I had used a makeup removing oil/balm before, and then used this as a final cleanse. If I had just used this and not a makeup removing oil/balm beforehand, I don’t think I would have felt my face was as clean as I’d like. But, I don’t think that’s anything on the cleanser really, just a matter of preference. I prefer foam/suds, so when I don’t have those, I just don’t feel like my face is as clean as if I would have had them. But, if you don’t mind cleansers without foam/suds, I think you’d feel like your face was fully cleansed after using this.
While I didn’t like this as the second step in my 2 step cleansing method, I did really like it as the first step in my cleansing process. But, even though I liked it as my first step, I don’t think that it was anything special. It did the same as my usual cleansing oil/balm, nothing different or special. Even the ingredients aren’t unique. Other than the marine algae, the rest of the ingredients are ones I see in a lot of my cleansing oils/balms. My usual first step cleansing oils/balms cost a lot less than this product. So, when I compared it and it didn’t do anything different and didn’t seem to have any huge difference in ingredients, I definitely didn’t think it was worth the higher price. But, I don’t like rating based on price since all of us have different views on what’s affordable and expensive, which is why I still gave this cleanser 4 stars. But, I do like to mention my thinking on price. For this, I just don’t see any reason for the cleanser to be $30 (at the time of writing this review) other than the fact it’s a Dr. Dennis Gross product. The ingredients aren’t anything special. It’s an ingredient list similar to tons of other cleansers I’ve tried that were priced a lot lower. So, I just don’t see the point in paying this price for this cleanser unless I was a big fan of the brand. Personally. I like Dr. Dennis Gross products. There’s some I do feel are worth the price, but this isn’t one. There aren’t many cleansers out there that I feel are worth a higher price point. There’s just tons of options out there that have great ingredients, that perform well, and that are on the more affordable side.
So, I do think this is a nice cleanser. It works well as the first step in a 2 step cleansing process. But, I don’t think it’s anything special. If you really enjoy the brand and are looking for a good product to use as the first step in your 2 step method, this could work for you. But, if you don’t care about the product brand name and only care about the price and how it performs, I wouldn’t recommend this because there’s many other great products out there that perform the same but cost a lot less. If you wanted to use this as your main face wash, you’d like this if you like cleansers that aren’t foamy/sudsy. But, if you like cleansers that have foam/suds, this isn’t for you.
