Dr. Martens brings its signature style and quality craftsmanship to these quintessential schoolgirl shoes. The 8065 Mary Janes are finished with broquing and buckle straps for an edgy finish.
Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Since I wear a US 10, I ordered the UK 8 and they fit quite nicely with thicker socks, but feel a little loose with thinner socks. I could never image wearing these without socks or knit tights, as it just looks and feels very wrong (in my opinion). They are very easy to slip on and slip off, so they've only been unbuckled a handful of times and the top of the backs are only just now starting to show a little wear from pulling them over the heel. They work well with pretty much anything, from jeans to business casual to skirts with knit tights. I don't remember having a "break-in" period with these, which leads me to think that if there was one, it didn't last very long. They are instantly recognizable as Doc Marten's and I receive compliments/comments on them periodically.
While they might seem a bit pricey when compared to similar looking shoes, when you consider the quality and durability they are worth every penny! I have been very happy with these shoes and anticipate that I will be equally happy when I order a replacement pair.
I noticed with this new model the toe area is not as wide or raised. Also the buckles on the Original model had elastic attaching them to the shoe so they stretched a little when buckling, the new model is directly attached with a metal rivet. The Original were made in England and new model is made in Vietnam, and the leather is much smoother than the Original. The insoles are more formed in the arch region, which works for me👍. Also new model has the cool Dr. Marten logo is stamped on the outer side of the back of the shoe another plus for brand hoes 😜. It seems to be true to size and I had no problem trying it on with socks. I don't think it will take long to break-in. My feet were even slightly swollen since I tried them on in the evening and no problemo🙃. I will say the top of the T-strap may rub if one doesn't wear socks or has thin socks. I suggest bending and working the leather a bit during the break-in period to avoid blisters or soreness.
Shipping was fast from US to Sweden, order on a Wednesday and received on Friday. I'm very satisfied with shoes so far and extremely happy with the Amazon's service. How this was helpful!
So the most important thing I think you should be aware of is that the buckles on these are super hard to get open. I had a very tough time with it, and I strength train, play piano, crochet...that's not a "whoo-hoo look at me" moment, but rather a "I do a lot of things that promote hand strength and these were unpleasantly difficult to get open" moment. So if you have arthritis, or fine motor challenges, heads up. It's always possible it could have just been my pair, but...this has been my honest experience with the pair that I got. They were so difficult to open it damaged some of the straps in doing so, I have attached a picture of that.
Next up: I have Achilles tendon issues on my right ankle. So, I wasn't really sure if I'd be wanting to keep these because they press firmly in a bit at the back, I wore them around the house for about the length of time I'd be in them for a church day just to see. And I think I'll survive them. But if you have heel spurs, I'm guessing these also might not be the most comfortable thing for you.
I have really wide feet for a woman, and these things fit fine, so I would say these are cut a bit on the wide side and if you have a narrower foot and have your heart set on these you may need to wear them with really thick socks.
Otherwise, these are super cute and I love the color!
Edit 7/15: I just want to mention real quick, I put some heel inserts in these, the kind that are typically worn for plantar fasciitis, and it helped with the back of my heel area, so that may help if you have anything tender on the back of your heel and really want to use these. I also tried my husband's shoe horn so that I could leave these buckled and get my feet in without hurting my tendon, and that helped a bunch also. So just a couple tricks you can try if your heat is set on these :)
