Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

The boot is almost black. The emerald green comes through on toe and back of the heel mostly. The green is dark. Again, barely noticable.
Leather is thick, almost polished. The kind of leather one would wipe with a damp cloth and be done. I do recommend using a neutral color leather conditioner every week to keep leather softer and more elastic. It seems that in the places where the foot bends one would get deeper kind of creases with this thick leather. The elastic on the sides is thick and wowen, looks durable but we'll see. The sole is cushy and has very much a rubbery feel which is good for traction. The heel hight and sole feel balanced in terms of what is generally recommended for most people. There is a HALF leather innersole inside and the area around ankle is leather lined. Past the half innersole there is special bootmakers kind of paper. Luckily my orthotics are leather - that paper does not work well with perspiration. The fact that the boot is not FULLY leather lined is a bit of a disappointment. Very few manufacturers do leather lining nowadays which is a shame. Good quality leather lining wears so much better then fabric lining.
The boot is properly cut for foot bends and curves. I bought a US9, UK7 - which is EU41 !!! according the chart and I normally wear EU40. I could have gone full size down easily. I fit orthotics in. With cotton socks the boots are still too big. Alright with thin wool socks and good with thick wool socks. I recommend going a size down if one doesn't have to wear orthotics. The boot is suitable for a wider foot - there is good width and DEPTH.Read more ›
I would recommend these boots but try them on at the local store before you decide on buying a certain size.

These soles fell apart right when I got them, and they are way too big. I have worn Dr. Martens before and these are not the same quality. I would not recommend this product.Published 2 months ago by KL
