I have been fine-tuning my supplement regimen for a long time now. I recently decided to add pterostilbene to the program due to possible synergy with resveratrol. The quercetin came packaged with in this supplement, although I did not have a lot of information about it. I am highly skeptical of Dr. Mercola and his guru nutraceutical marketing business - especially when I saw him selling "molecular hydrogen." The most abundant element in the universe, literally in everything you consume, marketed as a supplement. If there was a definition for charlatanism, selling hydrogen would be a one-line description. Just drink water...but I digress. Poly-phenolic flavonols are found in many foods and you are ALWAYS better consuming the actual food than taking a supplement. In my case I need to be careful of the oxalates in these foods due to kidney stones. So, here I am.
Regarding Quercetin: This polyphenol compound exhibits varied biological actions such as antioxidant, radical-scavenging, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, gastroprotective, immune-modulator, and finds also application in the treatment of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Besides, quercetin can prevent neurological disorders and exerts protection against mitochondrial damages. Various in vitro studies have assessed the anticancer effects of quercetin, although there are no conclusive data regarding its mode of action. However, low bioavailability, poor aqueous solubility as well as rapid body clearance, fast metabolism and enzymatic degradation hamper the use of quercetin as therapeutic agent.
Pterostilbene has similar issues with bioavailability and degradation, especially when taken as a supplement - possibly mitigated by taking with a meal. Anyway, I suspect that his nutraceutical business is important enough to him that Dr. Mercola would engage in some quality assurance on his name branded supplements to avoid a scandal, so this is probably a good quality supplement. I am taking this along with 500mg of resvertrol for the SIRT effects and inhibition of pro-cancer genetic expression.
NOTE: If you are strength training or body-building, know that this inhibits mTor, so I would take in the morning if fasting and not after a workout.
