This book has the most common sense approach to parenting I have seen to date. Very much an advocate of trusting your own instincts, he allows parents to be comfortable with their decisions.

A great reference guide, quick answers to a lot of those questions that new parents have... even the ones that they don't know they have, and the ones they don't want to admit that they have.

I highly recommend this book!

**********************UPDATE************************

So, my son is 4 now, and my dog-eared copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care still has a place of prominence on my bookshelf.
This book helped me get through a couple of awful colds. It helped me figure out childproofing. Struggles with toilet training (best advice ever- stop struggling!), dinner-time (same advice! :-) ) So many little (and big) questions were answered with this book.

I could research things in the book, prior to taking my son for his well-baby checkups.

I'm a single mom with a really supportive family - that lives a thousand miles away. Dr. Spock helped fill the gaps. It's not a bible, it's not infallible- I don't completely agree, but I don't completely agree with my mother either!

I just can't recommend this book enough.

**********************2nd Update!******************************

My son is now a 7 year old second grader. And we're a part of a blended family.

I've just pulled my extremely well used copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child care off my shelf again and find myself looking to it for help.
I think I'll need to buy another copy, as mine is dog eared to the point of falling apart- through no fault of the book, just from constant use.

If I could convince everyone to buy just one book to help them raise a child- this would be it.

What to do about lying, once a child tries it? What to do about bullies, when they're encountered in school? Should I call the doctor about that rash? My child suddenly developed some new, and strange fears - what should I do?
These are all questions that I turned to Dr. Spock for. And all things that Dr. Spock helped me with.

I LOVE this book!

We used this book when our children were born. It’s still relevant: easy to find what you’re looking for, tips for the most common issues, and solutions that are easy to apply.

As a nurse I can say that this book is the eaiest to read and most comprehensive, sane and sound on the topic of baby and child care. No extremes and a lot of support an respect for parents. I kind of know all that stuff being a nurse but I think it will help my husband with our first baby who is about to be born any day. My husband doesn't know anything about child care and I think this will be a valuable resource for him.

As for shipment and condition - it arrive on time and the book (I bought used) was in great shape. So I definitely recommend this seller.

This book is like the Gold Standard for parenting advice in my family. 37 years ago when I was born my parents referred to Dr Spock, so naturally when I became a proud dad for the first time I went to the tried and tested Dr Spock... So far my wife and I are extremely pleased with the advice offered and whir every kid is different in the end, this book is full of great advice.

I was given an older copy of this book when my son was born 9 years ago. This quickly became my favorite book. It told me what to expect from my child, initially from month to month, and as he got older, from year to year. When he developed a cough at midnight, I was able to figure out what the problem might be and what to do about it. If a rash shows up, they're all described in here. Now, I give this as a shower gift to any of our expecting friends. Great product.

My mother told me that Dr. Spock's book on Baby & Childcare is the best to use.
I am in total agreement and used it for my family for over 20 years also.

I like the index which is easy to use to quickly find your topic.
When you have a sick or injured child you are in a hurry to get answers. This book never let me down.

I give it as a baby gift to every first time parent I know(along with pacifiers and socks that stay on!)

It covers most concerns that parents could have about physical and mental health for their newborn through the first few years of life, and even for several years beyond that! There are very good reasons why Dr. Spock has been a reference for parents for generations, and all of them are contained in this book. Cannot recommend it enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like having Grandma or Mum in your shelf for advise.

Dr Spock is like having your mum or your grandmother in the shelf. When in doubt -and as a new parent you do doubt your ability, read about it and you will see that you are already doing the right thing or it will give you steer you to the right direction, but the bottom line is as Dr Spock will say, as long as you do something, you are doing it right. They are just little people who can't speak yet.
Get a copy now and chill, mum/dad, you are on the right way.

I use this book all the time! It's like my baby bible. It is up to date, has lots of parenting tips and answers the questions that you don't want to ask your doctor for fear they will think you are a bad or inexperienced parent.

I bought this for my daughter as I used Dr Spock as my "bible" when bringing up my own children. However, I have to say this is not as good as the original one and some of the sections are not very easy to follow or as informative as I thought they would be. I know childcare has changed over the years, but some of the information in here is quite sketchy and we have found the internet to be more useful than the book. It is handy as a reference book for first time parents but I am sure there are more useful books out there.
