Product Description

Stanley Kubrick s painfully funny take on Cold War anxiety is without a doubt one of the fiercest satires of human folly ever to come out of Hollywood. The matchless shape shifter Peter Sellers (The Pink Panther) plays three wildly different roles: Air Force Captain Lionel Mandrake, timidly trying to stop a nuclear attack on the USSR ordered by an unbalanced general (The Killing s Sterling Hayden); the ineffectual and perpetually dumbfounded President Merkin Muffley, who must deliver the very bad news to the Soviet premier; and the titular Strangelove himself, a wheelchair bound presidential adviser with a Nazi past. Finding improbable hilarity in nearly every unimaginable scenario, Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a genuinely subversive masterpiece that officially announced Kubrick as an unparalleled stylist and pitch black ironist.

Great collectors item, Great Movie

Great collectors item, Great Movie
TLDR: The Criterion case itself was in perfect condition and has cool additions. And the movie is an 8/10.I've seen most of Stanley Kubrick's filmography at this point and this is one of his most interesting. Although he has dove into the war genre numerous times, this is his first and only attempt (as far as I know) at a comedy. And for the most part, it was quite enjoyable! It kept my attention from the first seen and never really slowed down the entire movie. It's a movie with a lot of subtleties and social commentary about War and the Cold War in particular. Peter Sellers really sells this movie and successfully plays 3 different characters that were all loveable in their own ways. My only complaint with this movie is a handful of jokes didn't land with me in particular. But humor is very subjective, so what might not be funny to me, might be hilarious to another. But, this movie also works as a great war film nonetheless. Of you're a Kubrick fan, this movie is a must see. Not as great as some of his other hits, but it is as memorable in my opinion.

Dr. Strangelove will forever be as timeless as the notion of human error itself. Stanley Kubrick's legendary satire on Cold War paranoia manages to be relentlessly funny while also doubling as a haunting fable on our desires for control and the lack thereof.

Criterion once again provides a definitive way to enjoy this masterpiece. The film has never looked better and the sounds of war ring clear, making the film a fresh experience once again. The bonus addendums are also a real treat! They seamlessly integrate the film's humor with bonus content. Fans of this film will enjoy the extra features as a deeper dive into a greater understanding of one of cinema's most enduring achievements.

The Criterion Collection released this brilliant, and still timely dark comedy/satire from 1964 that looks superb in an HD 4K transfer, a definite upgrade from the 2004 Columbia Pictures DVD, porting over those extras, and including many new ones including various new and vintage interviews with the cast and film scholars, and it comes with an envelope marked "Top Secret R" containing a new essay booklet with an authentic looking type-written document, and a mini Holy Bible with Russian phrases, as seen in the film!

Directed by the great Stanley Kubrick and starring Peter Sellers in three distinct but effective roles, also features George C. Scott, Slim Pickens, Sterling Hayden, and Keenan Wynn, this remains one of the funniest(and sardonic) comedies ever made, its also among the most audacious., especially with that unforgettable ending....Not to be missed.

I didn't buy this one right away, being very satisfied with the initial "non-Criterion" release on Blu Ray. There are some new special features (and a repeat of several older ones), so if that is important to you, than this is a must own. One of my favorite films of all time I watch this at least once a year, and no matter how many times I've seen it, it does not age and always makes me laugh. Seemingly no matter what is going on in the world or closer to home with politics, I think this cold-war masterpiece has never lost it's edge and it's relevance to what is going on whenever you watch it. While the threat of destroying the world with nuclear weapons ebbs and flows, the debate about military versus civilian philosophy, sanity versus craziness, winning at all costs, and even the futility versus necessity of war has never stopped being relevant 50+ years after it's initial release. You might be depressed at the end or you might be howling with laughter, but either one is the perfect response to Kubrick's masterpiece.

I like the Sony Picture version, but this one is better. I have recognized both have banding noise. However, I prefer the Criterion version because of the way the grain stands out. I appreciate the Criterion version more in this respect. It also has more supplements. I'm glad I bought it.

Criterion release. The ominously whacked out Gen. Jack T. Ripper opens the doors to a nuclear apocalypse to save the pollution of his precious bodily fluids by communist subversives. Peter Sellers in three roles attempts to deal with the degenerating situation on-base and in the war room, where fighting is not allowed. Picture quality is excellent on this BD, with lots of Criterion extras. A classic, this is highly recommended. (j4.)

This classic Cold War dramedy captures the zeitgeist of its era very well. The scenes in which the President is on the phone with the Soviet Premier rival any of Bob Newhart's telephone bits. Recognizing how quickly the world could have come a-cropper in the emerging nuclear age, in which communication and remote sensing had not caught up with delivery technology, is sobering.

There is a common theme that politicians and nations need to revisit in every era: world peace is built on trust, which in the end is stronger than raw might and intimidation. This film captures that well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente para coleccionistas y fanáticos de Kubrick

I have read the book Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner by Mr Ellsberg and it mentions this film. Obtain a copy. It will cure your constipation if you happen to suffer from it. It would seem that the Nut cases portrayed in this film are based on a weird reality. (Albania would have been taken out early on. Read the book.) These fruit cake Nut cases are still around in positions of great power. I should feel terrified. Great film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Criterion collection release!
Reviewed in Canada on June 30, 2016
It both looks and sounds fantastic as is to be expected from a blu ray, and further than just that, it even includes a little pouch with some goodies such as a faux mini magazine(see attached photos) that I had no idea would be included. As is usual woth these releases, it also has a large selection of special features such as interviews and featurettes which are always nice to see. As for the movie itself, it's already a classic to begin with, and it was directed by Stanley Kubrick so nothing more needs to be said about just how good the film is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great film and excellent Blu-Ray package of extras
Reviewed in Canada on August 20, 2016
A truly great film and excellent Blu-Ray package of extras. Great performances from Sellers, George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden's precious bodily fluids. In one way it is a film of its time, black and white, virulent anti-communism, but with plenty of nuclear weapons stills around and a crackpot running for president, accidental or on-purpose nuclear war isn't that far-fetched.
