Here's a very satisfying trio album by the superb pianist Billy Taylor, with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan joining in on three selections. Of the tracks with Mulligan, two are pretty ballads (ROUND MIDNIGHT and JUST THE THOUGHT OF YOU) and the third is a Mulligan standard, LINE FOR LYONS. Gerry's probably played that tune a million times, but he still manages to make it sound fresh here. Taylor begins both I'LL REMEMBER APRIL and WHO CAN I TURN TO slowly before breaking out into up-tempo swing mode. His single-note solos are inventive and attractive. Bassist Leonard Gaskin plays the verse to Billy Strayhorn's beautiful LUSH LIFE and also takes a hefty solo on RICO APOLLO, a Latin-tinged Mulligan composition that strangely has no Mulligan on it. Dr. Billy Taylor has recorded a substantial number of albums throughout his long career, and this 1992 session is an impressive one and should give enjoyment to any fan of his or to modern jazz piano trio enthusiasts in general.

i bought this Disc back when it first came out and I always was feeling Billy Taylor's tone on Piano. he truly had a distinctive touch and the arrangements on this album truly capture the directions and tributes. he really had a way of playing and he was heavy handed with his chords and notes. effective and direct and he had style with his playing. very talented and a Great Musician. i enjoyed this album.
