About the Author
Akira Toriyama's first weekly series, Dr. Slump, has entertained generations of readers in Japan since it was introduced in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1980. A few years later, he created his wildly popular Dragon Ball series, which brought him international success. Toriyama is also known for his character designs for video games, including Dragon Warrior, Chrono Trigger and Tobal No. 1. He lives with his family in Japan.

Having just received this in the mail today, it's true that I haven't examined every panel with a magnifying glass to identify every minuscule imperfection. Were I do to so, I doubt I would find any regardless. The presentation of this release is great, and the colors are stunning. No matter how many times you've read the manga in its original form, you'll feel like a kid experiencing it for the first time.
I highly recommend this volume and the one before it as an addition to your manga library. These releases are of the utmost quality and deserve high praise for the crisp coloring and (mostly) true translation from the original source.
Right at the front is a multi-fold page that unfolds into a small Dragon Ball poster with a thank you note from Akira Toriyama.
Following on are illustrations from the weekly JUMP title covers as well as comic covers. Each is fully coloured and reproduced big. It really brings back memories of reading the comic, as well as anticipating weekly at the comic book store.
It's really great again to marvel at the uniform ink strokes and character designs of Akira Toriyama.
Every piece of work is annotated at the back of the book. Included is also the very unique sequential spine art for the comic, which at that time I thought was really cool. There are also mugshots of Akira Toriyama over the years, including photos and icons.
An interview with Akira Toriyama is also included to give this book some depth.
There's really nothing not to like about this book if you're a Dragon Ball fan.

This volume includes the end of the Strongest Under the Heavens tournament (with a fittingly ridiculous final match) and begins Goku's run-in with the Red Ribbon Army. Goku's assault on their stronghold, 'Muscle Tower' is so video game-esque in its execution that I couldn't help but smile. It looks like the conclusion to that arc will be coming in volume 6. Onward!
- First, the paper quality is magnificent. Each page is thick and glossy.
- The book is large (much larger than the VizBig edition), so that means bigger artwork.
- Reasonably priced (especially on Amazon) for the quality of the print.
- The color looks great in my opinion.
Why it didn't get that last star:
- Although I feel it is minor censorship in Dragon Ball Z compared to Dragon Ball, it still is present in this release.
- Not all of the "Title Page Gallery" (original Weekly Shonen Jump chapter title pages) are present, which is quite disappointing.
Other things to note:
- Dialog appears to be exactly the same as from the VizBig edition and original volumes.
- "Sound effects" (e.g., "HYUUN", "HWOOOOO", "DOOM", etc.) are, I believe, left true to the Japanese printing. There is now a "Sound Effects Glossary" in the end.
Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and will continue to get the series.
