One minute your a young girl running for your life as dragons pillage your town. The next you watch as your friend goes up in smoke, literally. Then you transform into a dragon- which is beyond awesome. I'd never thought the way he has them transform from people to dragons as a possibility, and I definitely didn't see the twist coming until the friend went up in smoke and it all started to make sense. And for the young girl it all happened so fast because for her dragons didn't exist one minute, the next they destroyed her town, then she turns into one.
I have a lot of unanswered questions at this point, so I'll be anxiously awaiting the next installment of this series. Because I want to know if they find the rainbow-haired girl, and what happens to the baby that is born at the beginning of the novel?
I highly recommend this novel and this author because he has quite a way with words and paints a vivid picture that pulls you quickly into the story.
This was a fast and interesting read. I actually can't wait for the next book in the series. I only wish there had been a little more lore about the dragons in the beginning of the book.
This world appears desolate with everyone living in a place know as the Dar Desert. A serpent eyed little girl is born and rejected by her mother just minutes before the return of the dragons of old. The world has grown forgetful and complacent to the idea of dragons roaming the skies again.
This is an interesting tale of a young girl with serpent eyes beginning a new life after the dragons kill her adoptive parents. It's also a tale of numerous children and adults who after being attacked by dragons and withstanding their plague that they find that they now carry the souls of a wyvern inside of them. Their transformation into these lesser dragons and finding that the wyvern souls have a mission that they must accomplish.
I look forward to finding out what the wyverns mission is and seeing the lives of the serpent eyed girl and those numerous individuals whose lives after transformation will never be the same. The world has changed and everyone has to find their place in it. Will the new dragons succeed and how many will it take.
Simmons is setting up the backstory for a series. I've said in other reviews and I'll say it again - world-building is exceedingly difficult, and Simmons works hard to get it right.
In this story, we are thrown right into the action - an attack by the eponymous mythical creatures that were believed to be dead. The countryside becomes besieged by dragons, and those stragglers around the countryside are forced into scavenging. Those who aren't decimated along with their towns are infected with a plague. One survivor of the initial attack, a baby girl with dragon-like eyes, wants to fight back, whatever the cost.
There's intrigue set up. There's obviously action. While I wanted more at the end, I knew ahead of time what I was getting myself into. Book 0 in any series is rarely going to give you total closure. So no, there was no real denouement, but I've read far worse cliffhangers. (Seriously, I don't remember the book, but it wasn't one of Simmons', that literally ended mid-sentence, and let me tell you, THAT was enough to put me off a series).
I can be forgiving of a lot in books. It's just my nature. Is this review completely unbiased? No, it's really not. I'm a fan of Simmons'; he's on my personal favorite author list. I think, that if you go into this fantasy story with an open mind and KNOWING it's a lead-in to an upcoming series, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Really enjoyed this book. Born not wanted by her mother then abandoned by the midwife & her assistant she was found, taken in and raised by a loving.couple who wanted a baby. This book tells of the day she was born. What happened then when the dragons appeared & what happened afterwards in the years that followed. Her teachings on dragons & her imagination of them. Then finally seeing one triggering her true form. Big Cliffhanger this is only book one in the series or a prequel.
The start of a new series and a new world. Wow, this book started with a bang and kept you on the edge of your seat right 'till the end. The story follows Millie, an experienced healer, and Wylan, a baby born with golden eyes and their experiences and adventures when the dragons came. What will happen to Millie? And what does Wylan, the child with the golden eyes have to do with the return of the dragons? Read this book and you will find out. I can't wait to get started on the next book, Dragon Plagued.
Happy reading. I just know you're going to enjoy this book.

Main character built well, could use more development for support characters.
Mispellings were a bit distracting.
