Authentic and moving fantasy tale

An authentic and moving friendship develops between a dragon and an octopus in this beautifully crafted tale for all ages. Arak the dragon is a dreamer and adventurer. Scree the curious octopus is a healer willing to rick it all to help those in need. My 10 year-old bookworm daughter (who is quite a discerning reader and not often lavish with her praise!) says, "The story's fabulous!" and I fully agree. This is a story to dive into, literally, because there's so much more to this tale than meets the eye.

Author J. S. Burke brings the undersea world to dazzling life, using her background in marine biology to salt her world-building with just the right amount of authentic and fascinating detail. As someone who grew up beside the ocean I can attest to that! Further, she tells a gripping yarn. While the story at its surface level follows the unfolding of friendship and cooperation of a most unusual kind between two different species, there is tension well sustained throughout and wonderfully imaginative descriptions of octopus and dragon art forms and dance, accompanied by a flawless depth and growth of the main and supporting characters in the tale.

The art of this tale for me, lies in how the author brings these disparate threads together while never allowing the narrative pace to slacken. Engrossing, uplifting and superbly crafted, this book is a keeper. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

First, this book is a real page turner. Yes, it is written for a younger audience but this reader feels it is best read by all ages. This author has touched the heart of all things real: friendship, honor, caring, and kindness.

This story revolves around Arak, a young dragon who is tired of being told what to do and picked on like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was in his story. Arak ventures out to prove himself but alas, he gets in a bit of a mess. To the rescue comes Scree, an octopus of unbelievable understanding. And the adventures begin, some good, some bad, but all meaningful.

As for the writing in this book, I was amazed. The amount of information given to the reader is crafted so well you feel as if you are in this world. Character development and communication refreshing and clear. Also, the underwater world which this author is very familiar with is expressed and explained to give the reader a clear understanding and appreciation for marine life.

I will personally recommend this book to all readers.

Combining two of my most favourite elements, the ocean and fantasy, has certainly not put this author in an easy spot with me as a reader. My expectations were really high.

The author's fascination with sealife is obvious, and it is intriguing how she intertwines it with the dragon world. There is so much lovely detail in the descriptions, and almost a science to it. I enjoyed the author's comparison of the daily rituals of sea and dragon life with the human perspective. In fact, most of the story can be taken as a metaphor to our world, even the environmental issues, conflict and the importance of stories for the growth of a species. Although there are absolutely no human characters in this story (which took some time for me to get used to), all the characters and their relationships are developed well, with lots of love and respect. The weather threats and action sequences are intense, but it is the life described that I particularly enjoyed. This entire world has been created with amazing consistency and attention to detail.

The admirable symbiosys of skills from completely different creatures, shows us how humans should learn, united by a common goal - life on this planet. And how interesting it is that the author has both species celebrate and encourage art, creativity and healing, in contrast to humans! Dreamers they are, truly.

Any child or adult who loves to explore and go on nature adventures, will thoroughly enjoy comparing this fantasy world to nature lessons at school. Teachers could find it useful in dealing with biology, environment, even art. If your child has the heart of a zoologist, oceanologist, artist, and is a fantasy fan, this book might just be perfect for them.

What I especially liked in the story is the strong emphasis on learning and communication - each species can learn from another when willing to communicate.

Here is an interesting quote, one I wish we could implement to human life more often.

This book does not fall into my preferred genres but it was a welcome change and a delightful read.

Arak is a dragon going on his first solo flight when he encounters a storm, severely damaging his wing. He is nowhere near home and lands in an unknown environment. He loses his food and everything useful to him during his fall. He is scared, hungry, in pain and expects the worse.

Scree is an octopus and as a healer, she goes in search of the required materials for her healing practices. On her return, she spots Arak and doesn't quite understand what she is seeing as she is only familiar with marine creatures. When she realises that Arak has been hurt, she follows her natural instincts as a healer and goes to his rescue. Arak is not familiar with marine creatures either and once he is over his apprehension, he realises that she is trying to help him. They find a way to communicate with each other and during the time that it takes for Arak to heal enough to return home, they learn a lot about each other and here begins a beautiful friendship.

When they realise that they can be of help to each other, they agree that their leaders should meet to discuss this prospective partnership. Arak returns home to a warm welcome, except from those who mock him for being a dreamer! It turns out that he has a gift. The octopi and the dragons start working in partnership and learn about each other's culture in the process.

Then there are the squids, the octopi deadly enemies. Can the dragons and the octopi work together by using Arak's gift to bring peace amongst them? Scree is more than willing to give it her best shot, even though her protective mate is worried of what might be the outcome.

This story is about living in peace despite cultural differences. The family ties are very strong and the loyalty resulting from the collision of different worlds is quite admirable. There is some romance coupled with rivalry when Arak falls for his childhood friend Zarina.

This book is very well written and shows that the author has in depth knowledge of the marine life as well as gemstones. It's an interesting concept and the storyline demands your attention. I would fully recommend this book to readers of all ages who like a good fiction fantasy and thrive on knowledge.

Fantasy and reality come together beautifully in this book, through the eyes of the creatures/characters you are absorbed and taken into their world. The beginning totally captured my interest with the wonderful descriptions through the eyes of the dragon and meeting the Octopus, who turns out to be a healer. I would place this as a young adult story with fantasy and mythical at its core. I did find myself getting a little lost in the middle of the book but I appreciated how each chapter had a strong message.

Love this book so much I bought a print copy and it is so worth it.

A truly wonderful story for young and old alike. It is unique in that it covers many topics, such as the barriers of language between species. It shows how some creatures are united in their love of art, science and technology. Truly amazing.

Arak is a dragon who does not quite fit in with the pack. He is after all a dreamer the other dragons mock him and call him names, they never take him serious. One day whilst out on a solo flight he is caught in a dreadful storm and crash lands upon the ice, causing himself major damage. However, thanks to a curious undersea creature called Scree (an octopus healer who just cannot swim away from a suffering creature) an unusual alliance is formed.

The story has an underlying message of being tolerant of others especially those who are different. It encourages us to live in peace with our fellow creatures. A highly recommended read a truly beautiful tale.

The Dragon Dreamer is interesting and original with beautiful descriptions and imagery. It takes you into the action straight away with young dragon Arak on his first solo flight. Not realising he has flown so far, he is caught up in a storm, injured and forced to crash land on an ice floe. Meanwhile, an octopus called Scree is celebrating the festival of the moon with the rest of her pod then goes to find supplies for her job as a healer. She finds Arak and bravely helps this new creature she has never seen before. They develop a way of communicating while Arak heals and this sparks off meetings between the dragon clan and octopus pod.
During a series of happenings the dragons and octopi prove to be very inventive and adventurous, leading to a quest to find copper. The dragons need copper to survive and their supplies are running out. Some are becoming ill and they are desperate to find a new mine. I particularly like this idea - turning the idea of dragon treasure around - they have it because they need it rather than because they're greedy. They also use precious stones to communicate and during festivals, they create ice sculptures and huge snowflakes with intricate patterns.
This book has themes of love and conflict within communities, different communities learning to understand each other, learning from each other and working together to solve problems for the benefit of both. Also of thinking about actions, right and wrong and responsibilities. I really enjoyed reading it.

In all the very best fantasies the dream becomes a reader's reality. This book delivers, and more. The author's love for, and deep knowledge of, sea creatures shines through every word. I was left entranced, and unsure if I was intended to read it to young nieces and nephews, buy it as a gift for teenagers, or recommend it to friends. The answer is easy: do all three!

I read the eBook, but I was delighted to see there is a paperback edition. Gift-wrapping an eBook is impossible, and this will be a perfect birthday present for one young lady -)

The Dragon Dreamer is a love story, in the sense of caring and affection, and utterly irresistible.
