The “Dragon” is clarity, forcefulness, and dedication. “Water” is free form and flowing. It takes the form of whatever it happens to exist in. The “Freestyle Lifestyle” refers to the ability to be both the Dragon and the Water at the same time.
Of course this Ying Yang approach to life is easy to discuss. But how do you implement being both Dragon and Water?
This book is a practical implication of this concept at many, many levels.
At one level, there is the biography of the author. He is a chef who has worked at the Ritz Carlton. Thus he knows how to work in a highly structured environment. He also is an entrepreneur who works with business leaders on how to be loose land creative when preparing meals. The theme of structure and creativity combined is a key component of his company, GLAM.
And then there is the structure of the book itself.
Is it a cookbook? Yes, there are some wonderful photos of meals he has prepared and the ingredients in those meals. But how do you prepare the meal? And how much ingredients do you put in. How long do you heat?
Figure it out! Experiment! Have fun! Learn!
Finally, there is the story of the book and it is explained in its title.
This young married man with two teenage boys is struggling with a rare form of cancer. This book tells the story of his treatment journey and personal struggles to deal with optimism and energy.
The Dragon-Water theme appears many times in this story.
This is a somber situation. And yet German's book is not somber.
German makes it clear that he was supported by a team that included his family and his medical team.
Again the structure of the book symbolizes the ease with which German Lam manages life’s duality: at one level it is a somber tale and at another level it is a scrap book of happy photos of German and his valued health care professionals.
If you are the type of person who gets upset when things are not black or white, you won’t like this book. But if you are the type of person who needs to function in a world where things are both black and white, then you need to learn the lessons German is teaching in this book.
What makes this book worthwhile is that he is not preaching. He is being very practical.
