Dragon Lieutenant, Leo Ryan is every woman's dream man and casino hostess, Tee has been dreaming about the two of them together for quite some time. But Leo keeps sending Tee mixed signals. Like a long, intense kiss followed by a warning from Leo that they can never be together. The problem is, although Tee doesn't know it, that Leo is a shape-shifting dragon in need of a mate to restore his waning dragon form to full vigor. Tee doesn't wear his mark, the mark that would signify that Tee is his true mate. If Leo and Tee choose to be together without a mate's mark, Leo dragon will not survive.
Tee is a Paiute Native American who has chosen to live off-reservation in order to earn enough money to improve the reservation's school. Her father is Chief of the tribe. His more traditional views are being challenged by more progressive tribe members. There is growing disagreement between the two factions that could prove dangerous for Tee. Leo vows to protect her.
This book is as satisfying as the first book, "The Luck of the Dragon". The contrast between the glizt and glamour (and excesses) of Las Vegas and the beauty of Tee's desert home is striking. The characters are well-developed. Leo and Tee are engaging. Old secrets test them, enemies plot to destroy them, but they stand strong. The love scenes are believable (and steamy). They are placed thoughtfully within the storyline, not just thrown in to draw your attention away from the lack of storyline as in other books I've read. The plot moves along well and holds the reader's interest. I was never tempted to skip to the end to escape tedious story-telling. I enjoyed reading this book so much, I bought a second copy and gave it as a gift. This book is a winner. I hope you try it.
"My dragon is a part of me. If I lost my dragon form, it would be like a part of me died." Leo scooted to the exit of the tent and then looked back at her. "I had already decided I give up my form for you, before I knew you were my mate. If that's the only way we can be together, I'll do it."
I seriously melted for Leo. I wanted to cry, because that's the sweetest thing a guy to say to a girl.
Anyway, Stop Dragon My Heart Around actually had more going on than the book blurb mention. Yes, most of the story has Leo trying to figure out if he wants to find his mate or going after Tee and giving up the dragon. We also have Tee needing to come to terms to some secrets that are reveal about her family and how she will handle them. Plus, there's conflict within the tribe that could effect her status in the tribe.
Honestly, Leo won me over, by his willingness to do anything for Tee. Seriously, love that guy. I mean he has to shoulder a lot of responsibility with keeping the peace all around him. Tee, I have to say handled her situation well and I was glad she was willing accept the things that can't be change. Yes, I did love Stop Dragon My Heart Around and I believe it's better than the first book. I can't wait to see what happens with the next set of dragons. I did like the fact that Susannah gave hint on who the next couple will be at the end. So, if you are looking for a dragon-shifter, you might consider Stop Dragon My Heart Around. By the way, the story can be read as a stand alone, because the story focuses more on Leo, Tee and the Paiute Tribe.
I also have much respect for the way that Ms. Scott developed the character of Tee and Native American aspect of the story. It was educational and emotional, yet not blatant and overdone. In the same way that Ms. Scott writes the dragon characters, she is able to deliver multidimensional characters that teach without preaching. As a reader, I fell into the Native American culture and became a part of it without realizing that I was falling.
Tee has a timeless quality that I think a lot of women can relate to, in that we all, at times, feel strong yet vulnerable, sure yet doubt, can see the path ahead, yet stray and have to course correct. It is easy to feel the daughter, friend, leader, woman, mother (even though she is not), and lover in Tee. Someone who pushes through the doubt and obstacles and keeps moving forward by following her heart. Tee rolls with the punches. She is not invincible but she gets back up every time.
And just a word about the heat between Tee and Leo—I love, love, love how Ms. Scott found the perfect balance of love and raw sex. It struck a cord with me how there was no shying away from what was happening between Tee and Leo and Ms. Scott was able to use language that was refreshingly to the point without being crass. These were some of the best sex scenes that I have read. Ever.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone—Paranormal Romance fan or not. Ms. Scott writes for the every reader, and this reader cannot wait for Susannah Scott’s next book.
