I don’t like to read reviews that give the story away s I won’t do that in my review. I will say that this book is so well told that all I could do is sit and read and while I was reading I could see it in my mind’s eye on SYFY as a series. Aaron is a one of kind paranormal who you can’t help but fall in love with at the same time as you both fear him. i mean I am thinking man I would love to bow at his feet and hand him a flogger.
Sophia is the swan princess “locked in the tower” by her father the king but she is not waiting for what he has planned for her. Nope she makes her own destiny. I have not read books in this series prior to this one, and in fact if I had not read other reviews I would have not even known there were other books before this one. Candace Blevins tells this story so well you don’t feel that you have missed anything by not reading other books before this one (although you bet ya I will be getting them now).
This book is full of hot and steamy scenes and other times loving romance. You will also find times you want to reach into the pages of your reader (kindle) and just grab Raul and the Eagle King and others by their throats and swing them around until they are road kill, but that’s okay we’ll let Mabel or Aaron take care of them.
I love seeing two very strong characters Male and Female who love each other and show such strength and courage. One of the things that I liked about this book is how Aaron helped Sophia find her “voice” and allowed her to rule and switch roles. This book is not simply a shifter or paranormal book or even a romance book. This book touches on so many things that are in the public’s eye right now but in a different fashion. This is one book I know I will be re-reading time again. Like a good naughty fairy tale.
I look forward to reading more from Candace Blevins and of course I need to go back and get caught up on the books before The Dragon King. I highly recommend this book as well as all her books.
What I love about it is that we know almost from the start that they want to be together. No messing around. So, we get oodles of couple time and lots of real conflicts internal and external that they need to overcome to make a love story that can last.
This world is rough. We have a cast of others and this book is gory as hell and the punishments for crossing the lines of power are violently detailed that uses sexual cruelty. This book may not be your gig. It manages to stay just this side of I can handle it for me because the world building is good enough that I accept that the torture is cultural and there wasn't an arousal expected to come from it on the part of the reader. However, I would have liked the book better if these sections were far less graphic and gleeful on the part on the punisher.
The character development of the heroine and heroine are as good as the world building. The struggle to become equals is well done and the love between them true.
Very good and compelling read.
Likes: There are so many aspects to the story that it’s safe to say, most of it. I loved seeing many of the characters that move in and out of the other stories, as well as many new ones. The practical nature of Aaron, who has had millennia plus to think things through and devise plans, homes, security measures. Watching Sophia absorb so much information so fast was developed well. I loved how she approached things.
Dislikes: There were times where I really didn’t like Sophia and in a lot of ways, that’s a good thing. It meant that Blevins did a good job creating her character, which is good. But, I did find Sophia to be too methodical at times to the point of tedium. While I recognize that time was of the essence in the beginning, after, it would have been nice to see more development in the relationship in terms of love interest, instead of merely stating it.
If you are new to Blevins as a writer, I don’t think I’d recommend this as a starter book. There are others that are far more entertaining. BUT…if you’ve already delved into her world of the RTMC, then you will definitely want to read this to round out your reading.
I've long been a fan but have never delved into her paranormal side. I really was captivated by this book and will read the entire series.
