Review
Reviewer's Overview:Alec-Ryuu Jun Yamamoto is a 13-year-old boy who lives in a hidden world, with many other orphans and refugees that are seeking to hide from the dreaded Black Dragon and their emissaries. The Black Dragon wants to enslave all non-magical beings due to their inferiority.
Ryuu is oblivious to his background as the possible destroyer of the Black Dragon. Or to rephrase, the information is withheld from him by his foster parents, in order to protect him. But his foster parents knowingly bestow him all the training they can, until they can finally reveal who he is. And when the time comes and the Dragon Knights resurface, Ryuu may have a little less tight of a chance at surviving.
*This book is part of a series.
Review:Overall Plot (5/5): It's a war between 2 sides. The one that wants peace, by allowing the magical and non-magical beings to mingle and share knowledge and power. And the one that wants to reign, by herding and enslaving non-magical beings, due to the vast difference in power between the two sides. Quick paced with descriptive writing and consistent storyline.
Overall Character Composition (5/5): As expected, we focus on the main character, but the author also does great in describing the personalities and state of mind of the secondary characters, and I found myself growing sympathetic to them.
Overall Engagement (5/5): It was a page-turner. There was always something happening, and though this first book follows a tight time schedule in Ryuu's life, it is marvelously and so descriptive as to the fights and movements, and cause and consequences.
Reviewer's Personal Opinion:This was an interesting stepping stone out of my comfort zone. While I've read many young adult books, this is the first one I read, that dabbles into science fiction and space travel adventures. I quite liked this book, because it exceeded my expectations of it and gave me a good insight into a genre that I may be continuing to read.
About the Author

So far the story was interesting. Why did the mother do this? What happened to all three childr. As far as the mother is concerned, we wait throughout the book for an answer. As far as the other children, we must wait further.
After the first chapter the story fast forwards twelve years into the future and we learn of the strengths and weaknesses of the now young man, Ruu. What also eventually learn is that the child has a special calling. Joining him are friends from the village in which he grows up.
The story does describe Ruu with some detail. It tells of his amazing skills and his challenges. We see playful interactions with peers and come to fondly admire Ruu. We see him in action and his adolescent behavior is typical despite his other-worldly origin.
The story has an interesting climax but left a few too many unanswered questions. Hopefully these questions will be addressed in future books of the series.
