That love hasn't faded at all. Melanie Rawn created a world and a people that gives everything you could possibly want in a fantasy world. It gives love, hate, peace, war, magic, royalty, commoners, children to take over the next generation and best of all; dragons. These beautiful creatures are central to the power, wealth and the lands of this world. They are beloved of Prince Rohan and his lady Sioned. They are feared by the peoples of the various lands that surround the desert holding, Stronghold, Prince Rohan's home and power base They are beautiful and vicious, wild and virile, birthing hundreds of hatchlings at each mating. And they populate the caves at Rivenrock near Stronghold giving Prince Rohan and his family the gift of watching these marvelous creatures in all their daily routines. Between the Dragon Prince,Rohan and his Sunrunner Lady Sioned, they take the lands of their fprefathers and through an unwanted war that hurts their hearts and souls in it's cruelty, they create a law abiding land that is cherished. From here they can reach for the stars.
Melanie Rawn has an imagination that exceeds most authors, particularly in the Fantasy genre. Her books bring me joy and sadness, love and resentment, appreciation and envy. She brings out so many emotions that I never know how I will be when I have to put her books down. I have come to love her characters to a point that I wish they were real. And what an amazing talent to have.
So Very Well Done, Melanie Rawn that words are inadequate. I don't have your gift of prose, so let me just say you have given me a gift that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you.
"Dragon Prince" is set on an unnamed pre-industrial world with plenty of magic and is framed as both a coming-of-age story for Prince Rohan and a battle between Rohan and High Prince Roelstra, who seeks to take over Rohan's lands. Early on, it takes Rawn a little too long to get from point A to point B, leaving the reader having to await the obvious, but by book's end, the pace has picked up and the moral and ethical issues have become much more complex than in the usually simplistic works of fantasy.
All in all, I enjoyed "Dragon Prince" and my discovery of Melanie Rawn, and look forward to reading the rest of this series as well as her other books.

The book stands alone but if you really want to read the rest of the series it is worth while. There is 'magic', political intrigue, revenge and war. There is actually a strong family element of powerful relations princes, dragons and gold. I do cherish the fact that I have recommended this book to several people and it is a bit like letting them into a secret.
