It is hard to overstate how much better villages and villagers are in DQB2. There are the fact that DQB2 villagers all have distinct appearances and personalities and proper dialog and costuming. There is proper furniture, and the characters can interact with it. There is a proper day/night cycle and the villages feel alive. If there is a raid, it is 5 minutes of crazy fun chaos that wraps up promptly and doesn't derail the game. Basically, everything works properly, and is utterly charming, and it makes Minecraft seem very crude in comparison.
This is a game I've been looking forward to ever since I finished the first Dragon Quest Builders, and it does not disappoint.
I don't agree with some reviewers that the controls are any better, they are pretty much the same especially with it deciding to put a block chest high when you're doing a floor or annoying steering while controlling a vehicle.
The storytelling is much better than the first game, the access to powerful items and blocks is much less until the very end.
It would benefit greatly from a guide, the chances of finding all the weapons, armor, and seeds of life on your own without searching them out online is pretty much zero.
I think my biggest problem is the attitudes the characters have, most are completely out of place (like they sent a hipster into the early 1900's.... complete attitude/communication clash), verbiage and how they express themselves can be completely childish on a character who has seen battle, friends parish and stranded alone for who knows how long. Its understandable everyone would handle said situations differently but "Like totally I am a warrior! for real! Just sayin! You do you! Thats like totally so awesome!" is not something I would not expect (Or EVER want) in a video game.
I understand the target group for this game, not some old veteran gamer who's seen the rise and fall and subsequently rise again of the video game industry, but in contrast to DQ builders 1 - this one took a much more childish/annoying turn and most conversations you will find yourself just mashing the skip button.
Weapons/Armor not breaking is a huge downfall - after all you are THE builder, why would they remove a mechanic that makes you BUILD?
Story is meh - easy to see it all coming and not once was I surprised by anything, felt a connection to any character or was concerned about any turn in the story. Most "character development" (if you can call it that) is strictly surface and childishly explored/explained. Usually in the form of super repetitiveness, I dont know how many times the same character said the same exact thing 5, 10, 15, 40 minutes later in the game during story progression.
un-skippable dialog is a HUGE problem. I dont know how long it takes a normal person to read 3 sentences containing 5-7 words... But it sure as heck should not take almost 2 MINUTES! I found no way to speed this up or allow me to skip it/move it forward like in normal conversations with other townsfolk.
"End game" so far has been VERY meh. I am not one for playing simply for end game, most my favorite games have little to no end game content, but the ones that do, usually have some good meat to it. This game's end game is just... meh.
Storage space is a problem. Though you can store items in items, like the "Colossal Chest", but it only holds the same amount of items a normal chest holds, so whats the point with that item? No clue.
Even with a kind of new PS4 PRO lag is experienced once you hit X number of items/buildings.
I cant recommend this game at all really to anyone except children, even then, some situations are very ADULT and shouldnt be played by children . You wont miss a thing by not playing it and its unlikely you'll gain much anything by playing it (unless you are a trophy hunter i guess).
This game is even more sandbox oriented than the 1rst with a lot of freedom and other things to do like farming among other things. If you want the ability of fishing then you need to buy the aquarium DLC for $9.99 USD.
It has many improvements that will help you navigate in closed buildings and also a 1rst person view if you press R3 on the PS4 controller, you have to find out what button to use for this on other platforms.
If you don't like to build stuff then this is not for you but if you like games like Minecraft and Dragon Quest at the same time then you will like this. You will spend hours on this game so be careful with your time.
