I received a free copy of this book for review and had high hopes for it since I love dragon stories. It far exceeded my hopes and truly drew me into the story. There are quite a few major players in this book both human and dragon. The author does a great job of bringing to life the characters and really developing the personalities. The focus of the humans in the story is a single family that comes from a long line of dragon hunters in a culture where those that can bond with dragons are killed. Bonding isn’t optional, once you come down with the dragon fever you bond or die. The main dragons featured come from two distinct backgrounds and are at odds with one another. A healthy dose of lore and history explained throughout the book clarifies the friction between the blue and gold dragons. There are quite a few twists that leave you looking forward to reading more and never 100% sure what might be next.

A great read for anyone into dragons. I purchased book 2 as soon as I finished this one and it seems as good as the first!

I was going to be doing a lot of sitting in airports over the summer and did not want to be bored out of my mind so when I received an email with information about several kindle books being offered for really cheap or free I downloaded every single one to my apple iphone and then the reading began. I read romance after romance and put off reading "Blue Dragon" thinking how awful it was going to be. Little did I know that I saved the best for last. I laughed that a reviewer said it was "wordy". Wordy is what I call the "Harry Potter" series. I am glad Rebecca Shelley wrote it the way she did. I actually read every paragraph because each one was interesting and full of pertinent details and believe me, I am a book skimmer. I actually went on Amazon today to order her next book in the dragon series and thought, "I should write a review while I am here", and so I did.

How do you review this book?

An imaginative and thoroughly-crafted fantasy world and society. A wonderful main character. An adventurous quest. Heart-wrenching choices and a satisfying ending.

But:

Misused sentence fragments. A plot glitch. At least one pronoun/antecedent error. Numerous extra commas and a whole lot of extra words. And that's just in the prologue, which is only two pages long. If I had found this book on Amazon and read the "Look Inside" chapters, I would have bounced out.

And I would have missed a good book.

This author has the courage to create Kanvar, a boy who is congenitally deformed. She has the skill to make us care deeply about this character: through respect, not pity. The trick, of course, is that he has not a shred of pity for himself. He only fights fiercely to succeed, in spite of his disadvantages. He fights his own limitations, the prejudices of his society, the mighty dragons (sworn enemies of mankind) and worst of all, his own vital need to bond with a dragon or die of a terrible fever. His quest to make a place for himself and to solve an ages-old enmity makes a tense and heart-warming tale.

Rebecca Shelley is a creative and talented author without the knowledge of what she doesn't know. She has written at least five books, and probably markets them successfully. Her website certainly looks more professional than mine. But she obviously doesn't think she needs the services of an editor. This is the kind of book that's "good enough for kids," who don't know enough about spelling or grammar to notice the lack of proper proofreading. Writers should remember that one of the main markets for children's books is libraries. Librarians know bad grammar, and they care.

Amazing! I loved this book, so much so I could not put it down and stayed up all night reading it. The author is amazing and keeping the action going but telling a great story while doing so. And it is a great story about another world with dragons and some of the people can bond with a dragon but that is now banned. The book revolves around a boy who grows up knowing he must bond with a dragon or get sick and die, but if anyone finds out he will be killed. I love how the characters are good to start with (good character depth and description of who is who) but become great at the end of the book (they evolve and change to us because we know them and the situation better). Great story about coming of age, but also standing up and believing in yourself. I am 32 and think this book is good for people of all ages.

I received this book free for a review, but this review is truly how I feel about the book

This was a light, easy read (with the exception of a couple of names...some were quite the mouthful). Read it fairly quickly and was enjoyable for the most part. Kids would probably enjoy it ages 12+ (although the names may prove to be a bit hard for some) but some adults might find it missing something (at least, that's what it felt like for me. What that something is, I couldn't say but I do feel like it was missing something. More depth perhaps? I'm not sure). But still a good one to pass the time. I could see one of my boys enjoying it more than I. While I don't feel like rushing out and buying the next, I will keep this series in mind for when I'm in the mood for a light read.
Rating this one is proving slightly difficult. It's more of a 3 1/2 stars, in my opinion, but have rounded up to four.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
