A great read for anyone into dragons. I purchased book 2 as soon as I finished this one and it seems as good as the first!
An imaginative and thoroughly-crafted fantasy world and society. A wonderful main character. An adventurous quest. Heart-wrenching choices and a satisfying ending.
Misused sentence fragments. A plot glitch. At least one pronoun/antecedent error. Numerous extra commas and a whole lot of extra words. And that's just in the prologue, which is only two pages long. If I had found this book on Amazon and read the "Look Inside" chapters, I would have bounced out.
And I would have missed a good book.
This author has the courage to create Kanvar, a boy who is congenitally deformed. She has the skill to make us care deeply about this character: through respect, not pity. The trick, of course, is that he has not a shred of pity for himself. He only fights fiercely to succeed, in spite of his disadvantages. He fights his own limitations, the prejudices of his society, the mighty dragons (sworn enemies of mankind) and worst of all, his own vital need to bond with a dragon or die of a terrible fever. His quest to make a place for himself and to solve an ages-old enmity makes a tense and heart-warming tale.
Rebecca Shelley is a creative and talented author without the knowledge of what she doesn't know. She has written at least five books, and probably markets them successfully. Her website certainly looks more professional than mine. But she obviously doesn't think she needs the services of an editor. This is the kind of book that's "good enough for kids," who don't know enough about spelling or grammar to notice the lack of proper proofreading. Writers should remember that one of the main markets for children's books is libraries. Librarians know bad grammar, and they care.Read more ›
I received this book free for a review, but this review is truly how I feel about the book
Rating this one is proving slightly difficult. It's more of a 3 1/2 stars, in my opinion, but have rounded up to four.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
