Marc, nearly fifteen, is going through puberty. However, puberty of an unknown origin. Becoming impervious to heat? One day having perfectly clear skin to waking up on the first day of the new school year with the worst acne he's ever seen, to torching his mom's birthday cake with fire that came from his mouth! No wonder he'd been having a sore throat! Then, telekinetic powers that nearly cripple the school bully. It's crazy! Things become clearer after he meets Steve, a boy a little older who knows who and what he is. That's all the spoilers, friends.
The author, Nathan Smith-Jones, uses metaphors and similes galore which are wonderfully descriptive. He also makes references that may make a few kids reach for their phone's dictionary. I love that! He is an English teacher!
Dragonkyn will keep you turning pages until you realize the sun's coming up. With short chapters it's logical to think "I'll just read one more...maybe two...or three."
I highly recommend this wonderful, entertaining and fresh book. Feel the "Vibe"!
So I read it after he did (since I usually do read a sampling of what he's reading to just make sure I know what he's taking in) and I read it in 2 days, too. It's fast paced and doesn't bog down. It's got some good vocabulary to expand a youngster's lexicon. As with any fantasy novel, there's a bit of violence, but it's not gratuitous or over done. In short, a winner!
Marc is a hilarious young teen. My favorite part about him is how he immediately assumes that, because he can’t be burned, he is impervious to all harm and ends up stabbing himself with a fork. Marc is a very relatable character and I love how the author portrays him.
As the storyline continues, moving forward, changes in Marc’s abilities become clearer. He also becomes more attached to others, making him more motivated to attack and defeat “the bad guys”. In the end mark is able to combine both and realizes his powers, using them by thinking back to a very important person he had gotten, quite, attached to.
