Music and environment is very rich and detailed. The game can be as long or short as you wanted to be depending on how many side missions and how much of a completionist you are. Pretty much think of this game as a shorter version of Zelda breath of the wild or even elden ring. Overall definitely a fun game and I'm looking forward towards the sequel Someday.
I love me a good RPG. Seriously. If you look at my gaming collection/history I’d say that easily 90% of the games that I’ve spent any appreciable amount of time in fall into that category. So when I found this game I was very excited. Here was a by now cult classic that I had never even heard of, let alone seen or played before. And when I saw that the Switch was getting a complete version of it, I was all over it. Sadly, my excitement was misplaced.
*What I liked*:
The good bones are there. I can see what this game is going for and there are a number of precursor systems that would later be adopted by other games in the genre.
The story, or what I saw of it, was interesting and novel enough.
The concept of these token humans that you could make into whatever you want is neat and I like how it’s implemented in the game world.
*What I didn't like*:
Sadly, this game is *very* dated (and not in a good way). The graphics didn’t age well. Jagged edges and low-res polygons abound. It’s just not great to look at. And not in a charming way either.
The game play was also bland and unrewarding. Run around and hit/shoot stuff. Occasionally fire off a special. It just wasn’t fun.
Level design also suffers from being not well enough defined. I can’t tell you the number of times I tried to go one direction only to have to back track and go all the way around the other way because of some frustratingly arbitrary object that I couldn’t walk around/through/past.
*The Bottom Line:*
Dragon’s Dogma isn’t a bad game per se. And when it came out I’m sure it was even towards the top end of the spectrum of RPGs for the time. But the cold, hard truth is that there are just so many good games out now that have the benefit of 10 years additional lessons in RPG game design that I can’t justify the time for this one. If you have nostalgia around it, I’d say go for it. Otherwise, seek a newer, more fleshed out RPG. I have to give this one three stars out of five. I would not buy this over again.
It's not the problem of your Wi-Fi connection. Instead, it's the quality of Nintendo's servers. There's nothing you can do about your home connection to improve this. It's a shame, really. If you can, the ideal place to play this is on PC or PS4. Portability is nice, but the online feature is really bogged down.
For the game itself, the combat is: fast, fluid, fun and precise. That's the only good part. RPGs are sought after though for their story and character development, and this game severely lacks those. The story is somewhat there for a short while, in bits and pieces, and then it just falls apart. It tries to rebound at the end but at that point you don't really care who the Dragon or the Arisen is. Then there are NPC side characters like Madeline, Julian, Mercedes, Mason, Quina, Selene, Fournival, Reynard, Aelinore and their stories go absolutely nowhere, lol. Some just don't have anything.
The game world is small, bland, and boring. It leaves little for exploration. You can run from Cassardis to the northern point of the map in probably an hour with a 200 character with max stamina. There's only really two cities, and just a couple other little outposts with a vendor or the option to rest. No wonder this game was overshadowed when it came out because it was up against the likes of Dragon Age, Skyrim, and Dark Souls. The Dark Arisen DLC does try to give it way more substance.
The Dark Arisen DLC is ok, but it's still too easy. A Ranger with Tenfold Flurry, Blast Arrows and Conquerer's Periphats can kill the DLC end game boss in less than 10 seconds (both boss forms combined.) There's a purification system to unlock the DLC end game weapons and armor. It's all RNG based, unlike in Skyrim where it's given that what you craft is what you get, and you can add your own enchantments. Here, it's RNG based whether or not you not only get a chest armor piece, but if it adds more health per second or some other effect. What's worse is that you need rift crystals (currency your pawn earns when rented) to unlock these items, and you may have trouble getting RC. Because...
The pawn system is flawed and so is the class system. Red vocations (fighter and warrior) are nearly useless, and are never rented. So don't pick them for your pawn. No one ever hires a warrior. Only yellow and blue vocations are sought after for pawns in this game. Also, if your pawn is not a female and not showing off a lot of skin, people won't rent your pawn as much. This game also has a creepy player community, in which some players create loli, or pawns that look like little kids. Creepily enough, these pawns get more hires and earn more rift crystals.
So, all in all, this game isn't worth your time. Get a better RPG. Yes, the combat is fun, but if you take everything from the game into account, there are wayyyy better RPGs out there.

But I still think the offline base version of dark arisen with the extras for the ps3 is better overall in the gameplay and fun department due too key changes to the main items and patch fixes in the switch version.
