Garrett has been many things in his time… street hustler, warrior, professional gambler, spy. He’ll do whatever is asked of him, legal or not. Now he’s paid to search for those with a touch of magic in them. But magic is unpredictable and hard to find, and he doesn’t have much luck until he meets Dru, whose family claim she hatched from a dragon’s egg. She looks different, doesn’t say a lot, and likes to talk to the chickens, though they don’t listen much. There might be real power behind her strangeness, if she could only learn how to reach it.
When Garrett is asked to escort Dru on a journey, accompanied by a scholar, a princess, a guard and a priest, it seems like a simple enough mission, until they fall into the hands of raiders. Garrett has lived on his wits all his life, but he’ll need all his talents, and a little magic too, to get them out of this mess and reach safety.
If he can manage that, maybe he’ll find out the secret of the dragon’s egg, and the girl who hatched from it.

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.
I also write traditional Regency romances as Mary Kingswood.

My least favorite book in this brightmoon world so far was the second god precisely because much of the mystery was missing and it focused more on romance and completing an already known story rather than an epic tale. Series are almost always disappointing to me for those and other reasons. Way too many authors use them to not write the whole book initially and publish tiny little 200 page things (or even less!) that don't deserve to be called a novel, stopping in the middle of the story so they can publish the next one as a new book. I avoid those authors and mention them only to say how much i appreciate that you tell the whole tale. It is interesting to see previous characters in other books, tho in this one i drove myself crazy trying to find Garrett in previous books. (Did you read Sherri Tepper's last book that pulled in characters from many previous books that really had little or nothing to do with one another?) I absolutely love how he calmly did what he had to do in the end even though it almost broke him. I feel you bringing this whole world together somehow and it excites me even while i dread it because i so love how the various cultures have dealt so differently with the same worldwide event. In case i wasn't clear, the romantic element is a turnoff for me so i hope it doesn't devolve into that - thus far you have mostly kept that in the background, or at least enough so that i can enjoy the story, and again i'm grateful for your imagination, writing ability, great editors and especially that you simply keep writing.
I write few reviews because 1. i read too much to write about it too unless something is particularly good or bad, and 2. i personally dislike reviews that tell me the story before i read it so i'd never do that, but sometimes, like now, i simply must write and say thank you! You are moving right up there with Sherri Tepper in my world, except her books are much longer which i truly love, and those are high honors indeed. So again, thank you, from an avid reader who is a big fan.

A man, a soldier who fights, loves to gamble and loves the ladies. A person not given to deep thinking, who always says the odds.
A lady, a servant, who sees herself as a princess. She rules only the kitchens with haughty and as much grandeur as she can manufacture.
These 3 set out on an errand. Seeking the isle of magic. Searching for an answer about their girl from the dragon's egg, and if that truly is her birthright.
Many lessons and changes as the trip advances.
Nothing is what you expect.

The story was written in a nice clear engaging style, that ramps up as it goes, making it hard to put down and easy to pick up again. I did find the pov’s a little odd at first, because everyone is third person, but Garret- who is in first, and we see none of Dru. I don’t mind reading mpov’s, I just found it odd that Garret’s was different (Dru’s was understandable).
After I got used to them, I quite liked the way the pov’s were used to open up more of the people and world. As the story progressed, we see the other characters who have rather bad opinions about their travelling companions at times, learn more about each other and their backgrounds etc.. and those views start to soften towards one another. And I found with Garret’s magic-which was that he could see through other’s eyes, it felt more like something we were involved in as well, from a firstpov, instead of just watching him as he did it.
Also, even though we don’t get a pov from Dru, she is very central to the story and we see her change and “grow up” by the end of the book. I really liked Dru.
I am not going to go into the plot because I don’t want to ruin the way it unfolds. I will say, I like where it went.
I do think the only drawback I had to jumping into book six of a series of self-contained stories, in a world as large as this one feels like it might be- was that the story felt like it just quickly touched down in every place they visited, and there were quite a few.
With those little tidbits of the bigger picture I felt a bit like a tourist trying to stuff a country into a week’s holiday. I was torn at times, when the story moved on because I kind of wanted to explore the area some more. Luckily, I can go back and do that at some point.
I should note that all the covers are now as pretty as this one.
