Although this romance seemed improbable to me at first, I did find the story of a white woman from the upper echelons of society falling in love with a traditional Chinese tong intriguing. I enjoyed the characters; they were believable and easy to relate to. The plot kept me in suspense and moved to a good conclusion. I particularly enjoyed the historical description of Chinatown, its customs and its people as well as the impact of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake on this part of the city.

There was so much more to this book than I expected. I loved the romantic story of Ruth Greer and Li Han-lin set in San Francisco's Chinatown right before the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire strike. The history to me was needed to tell this story. Ruth was the daughter of a wealthy San Francisco shipping magnate and Han-lin was a leader of a Chinese Tong. I just found this book fascinating. I WILL be reading this book again. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!!!

A fanciful romance with a good storyline. The setting is San Francisco of more than 100 years ago, portrayed with historical and geographical correctness. Earthquakes and fires visited California then as in the present.

I thought I would be so bored but this book quickly caught my attention all the way to the end! The intricacies of Chinatown early 1900's San Francisco was very different as well as the romance between the rich white debutante and enigmatic Tong leader! Well worth the read!

I'd recently read and loved Shanghai Girls. While considering getting On Gold Mountain, by the author of Shanghai Girls, I stumbled upon Gold Mountain and decided to purchase it. I was very disappointed - the writing and the story-line were, I felt, very poor. I nearly always finish the books I start, but after reading 3 or 4 of this one, I quit. I was expecting something much better.

This book takes you back to Old San Francisco during an age of excitement. Reading about how 2 people of completely different walks in life fall in love and try to overcome all the obstacles in front of them was enjoyable.

The best part of this historical romance is the richness of it's setting. In true romance novel fashion, there are seemingly insurmountable obstacles that stand between the two star-crossed lovers. In this case they are, a San Francisco shipping magnate's daughter, and the married leader of a Chinese Tong. Although the beginning of the book is somewhat stilted; the main character goes off into an area of town alone, that would would be unsafe to send her servants into. However, the ignorance of the main character, gives the writer opportunity to explore the dramatic culture of the Chinese in San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th Century. My advice it to suspend you disbelief at the beginning, and you will be charmed by the turns of the story. I found the book a better romance novel than most.

3.75 Stars
A well-researched historical romance. 4.25 stars on the history, 3.5 stars on the romance. The story is set in San Francisco (mostly in Chinatown) just after the turn of the century, specifically before, during, and after the 1906 earthquake. The atmosphere seems spot on (especially the cultural differences and the racism at the time). The romance is a slow burn, but it doesn't take away from the story. For historical fiction/romance fans.
