Drain the Swamp: How Washington Corruption is Worse than You Think Hardcover – April 11, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Lavish parties. Committee chairmanships for sale. Pay-to-play corruption. Backroom arm-twisting. Votes on major legislation going to the highest bidder. Welcome to Washington, D.C., the swamp that President Donald Trump was elected to drain.
Congressman Ken Buck is blowing the whistle on the real-life House of Cards in our nation's capital. Elected in 2014 as president of one of the largest Republican freshman classes ever to enter Congress, Buck immediately realized why nothing gets done in Congress, and it isn't because of political gridlock—in fact, Republicans and Democrats work together all too well to fleece taxpayers and plunge America deeper into debt.
"It is an insular process directed by power-hungry party elites who live like kings and govern like bullies," Buck reports.
Buck has witnessed first-hand how the unwritten rules of Congress continually prioritize short-term political gain over lasting, principled leadership. When Buck tangled with Washington power brokers like former Speaker John Boehner, he faced petty retaliation. When he insisted Republicans keep their word to voters, he was berated on the House floor by his own party leaders. When other members of Congress dared to do what they believed to be right for America instead of what the party bosses commanded, Buck saw them stripped of committee positions and even denied dining room privileges by the petty beltway bullies.
In Drain the Swamp, Buck names names and tells incredible true stories about what really happened behind closed doors in Congress during legislative battles that have ensued over the last two years including budget, continuing resolutions, omnibus, trade promotion authority, Iran, and more. If the Trump administration is going to bring real change to Washington, it first needs to get the whole story—from deep inside the swamp.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2017This is an excellent book that details the immoral, unethical and corrupt behavior of many of our elected politicians in Congress. The book focuses on the actions of Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, since that is where Congressman Buck sits, I suspect there is plenty of sleaziness on both sides of the aisle as well in the Senate. The sad thing about books like this is they attract readers who already agree with the authors' premise. The writer is preaching to the choir. Both Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives should be seething with moral outrage over Congress's unwillingness to make the tough decisions and do what is in the best interest of the country. The authors' solution is for the states to petition for a convention to draft Constitutional amendments for items like congressional term limits and a balanced.budget. This method has never been successfully used.to amend the Constitution. All amendments have been introduced and passed by congress before going to the states for ratification. It will require a nationwide grass roots effort to make this happen.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2018Buck is a congresman from COLO and is known as an honest and ethical person as opposed to Cory Gardner and Michale Bennett - CO senators who are so corrupt they rot when they walk and talk. This book names names, gives details (some "cardinals" should be named) cites events and shows the dirty corruption that exists in BOTH parties. Buck mainly focuses on GOP as he is a GOP and knows it better but come election time, those RINOS and corrupt self serving slugs in congress that serve only themselves should fell our wrath! This book makes the need for a CONVENTION OF STATES needed ASAP and term limits on congress! Too much power are in the hands of those who could not care less about Americans and only about themselves. This is a 5 STAR book - get it. You will NOT regreat it! THEN GO VOTE!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019This very short and to the point book by Representative Ken Buck R (CO-4th) and Bill Blankschaen homes in on many of the problems in Washington I had come to know after being there for 15 years. Many of the parties and dinners mentioned in the first 10 chapters of the text I have attended in republican circles. In the first 118 pages Buck et al informs the reader as to the character and behavior of members of Congress in the 111 days of time they provide during the yearly sessions. I witnessed much of the stories told here.
The political commentary reads similar to the dark comedy film, “The Distinguished Gentleman, “ one of my favorites and a film I use to give to anyone going to Washington for anyone spending time in The Swamp. As a member of the “Freedom Caucus” Mr Buck provides a very conservative view of the legislative process and their behavior in the hallow halls of Congress in Washington DC. His insights are primarily on the House side where he serves.
The second portion of the book provides prescription as to how to mediate the culture there from President Trump's perspective and then to the citizen of the United States. The authors spend much time on Article V of the Constitution to introduce a Balance budget Amendment and term limits. In fact there is an Appendix as to implement this process at the end of the text. Additionally, the creators of the work provide a 20 page copy of the US Constitution in one of the appendices for the reader that does not possess one in his or her library. I am very impressed the congressman had the fortitude to pen this while still in congress. My hat is off to you sir.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017This book reveals what really goes on in Washington. Written by a sitting Congressman it exposes the real reason for government gridlock. Congress, both parties, have only one goal - to get reelected and continue living the good life of parties, fancy dining, and free trips, all at the expense of the taxpayers. This is a must read for all that are concerned about the survival of the Constituti9on and our democratic system of government. It explains how a Constitutional Convention can be demanded by the citizens and how it could be used specifically to reguire term limits for our legislators without affecting any other parts of the Constitution. When you read this book you will realize that term limits for members of Congress must be one of our ultimate goals.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2018The great thing about Ken Buck is that he is both an insider and an outsider. He is far enough inside to know how the system actually works, and far enough outside it to be disgusted by it.
The book is rich with real life examples of the everyday betrayals of the people and provides the reader with a stark realization of just how difficult it will be to drain the swamp. Ken writes with passion and a straight forward style. The book is easy to read and greatly expands the reader's understanding of how the system works or to be more to the point doesn't work.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2017I was advised by a co-worker to read this book when he overheard me complaining about the partisanship of the media and congress. This book has enlightened me to just how broken our current corruption based system really is. Mr. Buck obviously cares greatly for his country and fellow citizens. His honest and brave telling of the insider antics of our mired government must have taken a considerable amount of forethought and selflessness. We can all learn from his summation of how each American MUST get involved and exercise our duty to motivate our government through Article V.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2017This book is well written and very timely. I am convinced that We the People have allowed our Federal Government to run amok and become the bloated behemoth we have today. I was particularly interested in his suggestions of what We the People can do. Even if you have not read the book you can still get involved in the solution. Check out the Convention of States at conventionofstates dot com. Or at cosaction dot com. This is the process outlined under Article Five in the US Constitution that lays out exactly how We the People can fix this mess.
