In DRAMA LUAU we find Nicky and Noah enjoying a working honeymoon at the Maui Mist Resort in Hawaii, directing the hotel Luau performance. The first night performance is a huge success until dancer Kimu is hit on the head by a falling tiki light. The fact that his body disappears in the mayhem that follows leads some to believe he isn't actually dead. Convincing the good looking detectives, John Nohea and Kekeo Karma, proves somewhat difficult for Nicky and Noah. Since gorgeous, muscular John is too busy flirting with Nicky to listen to them, and beautiful Kekeo seems more interested in questioning/flirting with waitress Akela, it will be up to Nicky and Noah to begin their unorthodox and often hysterically funny sleuthing.
Replacing Kimu proves to be an unexpectedly simple task as waiter Mark Iona has been desperately waiting for his chance at centre stage. Proving up to the task, Mark joins the others in the second night performance until a second dancer falls to the floor and once again, in the mayhem, the dancer’s body disappears.
With dancers dropping like bowling pins in an Olympic competition, an unexpected person sneaks into Nicky and Noah’s room one morning. Taavi is the seven-year-old grandson of Lani, the head of housekeeper. Taavi proves to be a very useful assistant sleuth, providing inside information, including about Lani, that is helpful to the investigation.
The list of suspects grows. There's the hotel owner, closet gay conservative Christian homophobe Mano; his wife, conservative politician and closet dominatrix Joanna Kopena; and Walter, the hotel manager with a secret past. Joe Cosentino’s writing is peppered with hysterically funny metaphors, many, though not all, politically based. For example, “Murder and mayhem follow you two like an anti-gay politician and the darkened back room of a gay bar.”
Joe Cosentino has a unique and fabulous gift. His writing is flawless, and his use of farce, along with his convoluted plot-lines, will have you guessing until the very last page, which makes his books a joy to read. His books are worth their weight in gold, and if you haven't discovered them yet you are in for a rare treat. DRAMA LUAU joins his other books on my 5 star reread shelf. It may actually be my favourite one yet!
Let me explain why. The definition of a farce is “a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterisation and ludicrously improbable situations”. Yep. Joe Cosentino covered all that and so much more.
I'm going to go all fan-girly here when I say that I have read everyone of his M/M books and loved every unique one. I really thought he had reached his writers summit and couldn't climb any higher. Oh boy, was I wrong. Not only did he breach his summit, he touched the clouds as well, he truly surpassed himself on this one.
Due to a lactose and glucose intolerance outbreak, Nicky and Noah’s parents businesses are suffering, so much so they are unable to pay for their sons honeymoon. Not a problem though, as their wonderful friends and work colleague, Martin and his so droll husband, Rubén have found them a Production to produce in Hawaii, the honeymoon is still on!
Now my advice at this stage to any would-be traveller, would be to check the Passenger List before embarking on your travels. If you see the names of Nicky Abbondanza and Noah Oliver on the list, go in the opposite direction, preferably the other side of the world because it's the only way to guarantee your survival, the body count when Nicky and Noah go visiting is just staggering…..
The words of “The show must go on” has never been so daunting with their dancers forgetting their artistic grace and dropping like sacks of potatoes. Nicky and Noah were hoping to have their hands full with each other, not a list of suspects that seems to get longer and longer and with every chance that their names could well be on the killer’s list as well.
Is the drama of the Luau Nicky and Noah’s last party? Read to find out yourselves….
Five big fat Aloha stars from me.
**** I voluntary reviewed an Advance Readers Copy of the book****
For those of you that have not read any Nicky and Noah Mysteries, Murder seems to follow them wherever they go. In Drama Luau, Nicky and Noah have just got married and due to outbreaks of lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance outbreaks their parents business are suffering and they can no longer pay for the honeymoon. Not to worry though. Martin the head of their department and best friend has set them up with producing a hula production in Hawaii. When the hula dancers start dropping dead like flies, Nicky has to put on his Sherlock Holmes hat and help solve these mysterious deaths.
These stories get funnier each time I read one. I adore Nicky and Noah and Martin as well. In this one there are several other characters as well but my favorite was Taavi a native of the island and only 7. The plot is a mystery of course and again I had no clue until the end of who or why was doing the murders, this one the why was really a big surprise!
If you are looking for a fast-paced, fun story that will make you laugh I highly recommend this one!
