This small book is nicely made — it is not spiral bound, but it opens flat enough to write and draw in it easily. I like the small size because I can carry it along. The illustrations are colorful and fun. There are all sorts of different prompts to respond to. Sometimes I read several different pages before I choose which prompt to follow at that moment. Some prompts suggest that you draw things that are very concrete, such as items in your pocket. Other prompts encourage you to draw something abstract, like a feeling or your ‘inner critic.’ Of course, this book is not about creating professional art, but sometimes my perfectionist personality worries that my drawings are horrible, and this book has prompts for days when I feel inadequate to draw a picture for myself. For example, there is a page with basic outlines drawn of an owl, and the prompt is to add detail. Even on a bad day I can add detail to an owl! Though this book is primarily interactive, with me drawing things on most pages, the author also provides good insights and useful strategies for dealing with anxiety. There is an index to help you so if you want to find one of those tips or a particular prompt again.
So, this was a great gift to myself. And I think I’ll be gifting it to my anxious friends.
Having to focus on something at hand helps distract the mind, and this book is perfect to prompt one to draw and distract their mind to be in the moment. The prompts can help bring emotions to the surface, but should then be worked through with a licensed therapist. I am someone who needs to process first before speaking, so I can see using this to draw and get emotions out in the moment, and then flag it for therapy sessions.
I like how it is smaller in size to take on the go, and each page is colorful and with space to draw. You can also jump around as each page is unique and stand-alone.
