This book is perfect for what I need. It has a section which is just aimed to inspire. The second part of the book is a tutorial in creating and understanding type, with a selection of type sheets for you to trace to learn the basic. but, as stated throughout the book, Alex Fowkes wants you find your own path into the world of illustrating type, not just copy whats already been done.
I can even vouch for the specimen sheets and the practice instructions at the end of the book. Fowkes includes a few pages at the end explaining a technique of tracing fonts to understand their composition. At first, I was hesitant to try this because I thought it was redundant to copy another artist's font and trace the letters. Needless to say, I was surprised at how well it worked. Although tracing did not result in a great piece on its own, it gave me practice in lettering that I can now use to tweak fonts to become my own. I love doing this as a hobby, the art of lettering will continue to interest me for a long time, and this book is a great place for inspiration, beautiful artwork, and a little fun.
This book is definitely worth the price, and anyone interested in any form of lettering should pick it up.
