For many years I was excited to have all of Michael's greats in one collection with upgraded sound quality. Both "A Backward Glance" and "Anthology" could satisfy casual fans, but were too brief for lifetime admirers like me. Here was an opportunity to present the truly definitive collection from his almost forty year body of work, but it doesn't quite cut it. And though "The Dream" is the largest compilation of MF's music to date, it is still far from complete.
I understand compilations will never have everyone's favorites, but I think you can complain with 73-track box, if not all essential tracks were included. It is missing some true classics - "Tiger in the Rain", "Mr. Blue", "Down in Brazil", "Vivaldi's Song" just to name a few. The question is why.
CD 1 "Pop & Funky Groove" seems like a bit of letdown. It got a poor start: "Can't Seem to Shake This Rock'n'Roll" and "Born with the Moon in Vergo" simply don't match up to the rest of the set. This also could have been better: so many classy pop and funky songs are left off the disc ("Mr. Smooth", "Never Satisfied", "Soul Mate", "Coming to Life" etc.), which could have fitted, if they hadn't put other less important songs, such as outdated "Now That Your Joystick's Broke". I am also at a loss as to why the funkiest album in MF's discography "The Camera Never Lies", which is without question one of his best, was skipped in it's entirely.
CD 2 "Jazz & Exotic Summer", as its title says, mostly focuses on the jazzy and Brazilian sides of Michael's music. Once again it misses some great songs. The most glaring omissions are "Antonio's Song", "Down in Brazil" and "Island Life" - all these tunes truly belong to this CD. But according to the track list, guys from Rhino consider "The Way We Celebrate New Year's" a summer tune.

This is possibly the worst compilation of all time. Given the fact that there were no less than FIVE CD's in this well-presented collection, you'd have thought that someone at Rhino might have been more judicious about the track selection. There are way too many Michael Franks gems and classics missing for this to be a valid representation of his vast body of work. Do yourself a favour and steer clear of this if you are a true devotee of Michael Franks.

I've really been grooving on the new Michael Franks box set called "The Dream." The individual CDs make for great "drivin' around town" music. I like the way the songs are divided into themed discs, "Pop & Funky Grooves," "Jazz & Exotic Summer," and "Soft & Cool School." The latter "Soft & Cool" disc is particularly marvelous to listen to. However, for longtime Franks-ophiles like me, the real attractions with this set are the fourth disc, "Rarities & Previously Unreleased Tracks + Duets & Covers," and the live album with Crossfire. I have every one of Michael's studio albums (all eighteen of them, pictured in the booklet that comes with "The Dream"), but I did not have most of the songs on the "Rarities" CD. Nor did I have the Live album, originally released in 1980 on WEA Australia. Nicely, it is reproduced here in replica form, with a cardboard sleeve and paper jacket. Even without the rarities, though, I think I still would have bought this set, just for the convenience of having the songs presented this way. Saves me the hassle of burning my own Mike mixtape, which probably wouldn't have been as good as these CDs anyway! Mr. Franks' music has given me so much pleasure over the years, and this is a wonderful way to get back into it.

I enjoy Michael franks. I like him especially when he crosses over into more commercial territory like "your secret's safe with me" but that said I bought this thing for one cut "coming home to you". this song runs over the final credits of "author, author" a pretty mediocre movie but I have loved the song forever and it was nowhere to be found. now it's mine.

As I was preparing to write a review for this product I looked at the other reviews first to keep from being repetitive and to make sure we are on the same page as from what I saw, we are. This set is ambitious for sure. Four cd's divided up by theme and the body of work presented by style rather than chronologically to keep the material fresh and this entire set mastered utilizing 20 bit technology which results in a cleaner sound with slight errors in the sources corrected. I was and am excited about this set, it's one of the biggest and most comprehensive around and like music itself, subjective, you can't please everyone. I like the execution of this set, the material will remain a bit more fresh and I like the inclusion of a track or two from every Michael Franks album except one and I'm a bit baffled by, there isn't track one to represent the 1987 album "The Camera Never Lies." Two tracks from that cd, given the thematic approach here, "Innuendo" and "Island Life" would have most certainly fit in and on the rarities and duets cd "Now You're In My Dreams" with Patti Austin would have worked, that song got airplay when first released. In the foreseeable future I don't believe there will be a stand alone disc of Michael's rarities and this set is an import, maybe in a few years it will receive a stateside release and some of the tracks may be tweaked but that is a rather expensive undertaking, we'll see. For what it is even with glaring omissions this is a great representation of Michael's work thus far and kudos to Rhino for not only the excellent sound engineering but all selections are full length.
