Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most prolific and most popular authors. His career has been a varied one: for many years he was a professor of Medical Law and worked in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad. Then, after the publication of his highly successful 'No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency' series, which has sold over twenty million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series of books translated into over forty-six languages and become bestsellers through the world. These include the Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in The Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions series, novels which started life as a delightful (but challenging to write) cross-media serial, written on the website of the Telegraph Media Group. This series won two major cross-media awards - Association of Online Publishers Digital Publishing Award 2009 for a Cross Media Project and the New Media Age award.

In addition to these series, Alexander writes stand-alone books. 2014 sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. This year there will also be a stunning book on Edinburgh, 'A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh'. Earlier stand alone novels include 'La’s Orchestra Saves the World' and 'Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey'.

Alexander is also the author of collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children. He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the Year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds honorary doctorates from nine universities in Europe and North America. In March of 2011 he received an award from the President of Botswana for his services through literature to that country.

Alexander McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh. He is married to a doctor and has two daughters.

This book is a quiet pleasant read for a relaxing afternoon or evening. Read, dream and smile with this book. Great summer read for me.

As usual, I love Alexander McCall Smith. This is a departure from his other books I've read. Angus is a Scottish god who comes to you in your dreams or causes you to have vivid dreams. Interspersed with Scottish mythology stories are short stories from modern times. A wife betrayed by her husband, a keeper of livestock at a research facility, a boy determined to tell his father of his mother's infidelity;these are a few of the stories. As I said, it is a different sort of book for this author.

I don't like his female investigator series, but had high hopes of this due to the myths series it's in. It's the weakest so far of what I've read in the myths series, but progression of Angus figure through time is well done.

For lovers of Celtic mythology and lore, this is a must read. For dreamers (and who doesn't dream?) ... it's a must read.

Alexander McCall Smith has written a gorgeous retelling of the myth of Angus, interlaced with a series of deeply provocative modern vignettes. I read Dream Angus in one sitting, stunned at the beauty & eloquence of McCall Smith's storytelling. For me, the tales provoked tears of empathy with the human experience. I can see myself giving this slim volume as gifts, many times over. It's a tale to read again and again ... either in its entirety, or by individual chapters.

I enjoyed this book very much. I look forward to another in what I understand is a myth series. Alexander McCall Smith has examined Angus, the Celtic god of dreams, his own life, and the effects his gift of dreams brings to others.

This book is simply amazing. If you have not read the myths of Oengus/Aengus Og, the Irish God of Love, go do it! Alexander McCall Smith distills it all into a series of wonderful stories filled with dignified humor, and sensitive understanding of the depths and faces of love, the ways we discover love, how we search for and offer love. One of my favorite books.

Reading this small book was like a vacation from the usual heavy fair of today's novels. It is perfect for taking a break and spending a short while with whimsy.

I'm finding it an interesting but not an engaging read. I can hardly put down Smith's other books. This one I pick away at, often when I'm wanting to get to sleep (and dream my own dreams).

3.0 out of 5 stars Dream Angus, By Alex McCall Smith
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 12, 2012
Judging by the photo of Alec McCall Smith on the Dust jacket of this book, this is an earlier work than his acclaimed Scotland Street series. I didnt find it so rewarding, or as interesting. It is about the Celtic Mythological figure, "Dream Angus", who in legend, visits children and adults alike to give them the gift of lovely and imaginative dreams. A bit like the Sandman, with a Celtic twist. I think it may have beena good idea to start the work with the famous Lullaby about Dream Angus, but he didnt do this.
I found some of the stories to be dull, they did not, in my opinion, have McCall Smiths usual trademark quirkiness and charm . It wasnt a book which "grabbed me", in fact I found it difficult to finish it.Only my opinion, however, others may beg to differ.Dream Angus: The Celtic God of Dreams
