And then, out of the blue, there is the Wow! moment. Some of Ms. MacDonald's poems are marvelous. The haiku, Ancestral Hounds, Lilies, and the poem Wings of Children alone would be worth the cost.
Be warned, there are also some very creepy and disturbing poems in here. I especially advise all readers except for lovers of the macabre to avoid the final poem, Shooting Butterflies.
For the short stories, they are very good if disturbing and haunting. Ms. MacDonald ventures out of the realm of fantasy most of the poems inhabit, and into the real world of neglected children and abandoned elders. These characters are sad and pitiful, abandoned by the very people they love and trust. Also well worth the price, but definitely tearjerkers. You'll want to give your children an extra hug and then run down to the local nursing home to volunteer after reading these.
Keep an eye on Ms. MacDonald in the future, this is her debut work and from what I've seen, her writing, already gleaming in places, will only improve with time.
