Author Dan Richter took a year's leave of absence as lead performer at the American Mime Theatre and teacher at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to study mimetic forms around the world, and was swept up in the exploding counter culture. Richter starred in and choreographed the opening of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. With his friends Allen Ginsburg, Gregory Corso and William S. Burroughs, Richter helped produce and read his poetry at the legendary Albert Hall poetry reading, as well as publishing their poetry. A close friend of Yoko Ono's, the focus of the memoir is the four years Richter lived and worked with John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1969 to 1973. The Beatles, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan and many other figures from rock 'n' roll and the arts fill the pages of the memoir. The book reveals an intimate insider's look, chronicling everything from battles with heroin addiction, John and Yoko's concerts, their political activities, films, the breakup of the Beatles, to the making of the album Imagine.

Dan Richter is best known as Moonwatcher the man-ape in the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” which he also choreographed. Dan has had a long career as a mime, choreographer, actor, director, producer, memoirist, and for two decades a Hollywood executive. His book “Moonwatcher’s Memoir” is about working on “2001.” His memoir “The Dream is Over” describes the years he lived and worked with John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1969 to 1973.

Dan currently lives in Sierra Madre outside of Los Angeles where he has been leading Sierra Club mountaineering trips since 1991 and teaches courses on rock climbing and mountaineering. Dan is an AMGA Single Pitch Rock Climbing Instructor.

Wonderful book! For any fan of the Beatles it's a MUST HAVE. Mister Richter, an American, was personal assistant to John Lennon and Yoko Ono during the dramatic breakup of the band and for years afterwards. Dealing with them on a personal, intimate level he narrates those years with a humble honesty in a well arranged narrative that makes the bizarre events of their lives and times accessible to the reader. There is no padding or exaggeration and no pandering to the cult of celebrity. Their vulnerability and aspirations, as well as Mr. Richter's, are not glossed over.
In a time of dynamic cultural change John and Yoko represented the vanguard. Yoko was reviled and John was loved, yet he's the one who was murdered. This book gives the reader a true look at a glorious time in our past and a unique view of one of the great talents of our age and the woman he loved, lived and died with.
The introduction by Yoko Ono gives Mr. Richter's work the ultimate 'bona fide'.

If you lived through the 60s and 70s this book is a must. It'll bring back the feel and experience of those years as it makes them live again. The book's portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is among of the best you're likely to read. As an insider, Richter writes unsparingly and honestly about himself and the people who Lennon and Ono were and not the celebrity Icons the world came to see them as. As for his take on his own drug addiction and what it cost him personally and creatively; that alone makes the book a must read. If you have kids or grand kids who are beginning to dabble with drugs just give them this book and I promise you that they'll be asking themselves some serious questions about where drug use and or abuse on any level might take them and whether that's a place they might want to go. In short, order this book ASAP. I assure you that you won't regret it. It makes for an an absolutely fascinating read.
