"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? The story begins as accomplished environmental prosecutor Angela Bane is preparing for her annual synaptic backup, and even though it's a routine process that she has been through repeatedly, she's apprehensive. But unlike other backups, she wakes from this one to hear a team of surgeons stressing out over the procedure she's in the midst of. She's confused and unable to speak or move. After surfacing and submerging back into unconsciousness several times over an unknown period of time, she finally learns what has happened to her, and it's disturbing indeed. Twenty-two years have passed since her murder, and in the intervening years, remarkable progress has been made in the field of resuscitation, or reanimation, and she has been resurrected far longer after her death than usual.
So her new reality is that twenty-two years have passed for everyone else, including her fiance Jordan, while she has not aged at all. Although she realizes that some time passed following her backup, she has no memories of that time... until the dreams begin. Then, Maddox, the detective originally assigned to investigate her murder, shows up in hopes that the victim may possess some missing clue to solve the case.
As I said at the beginning of the review, some really awesome concepts are the basis of this novella, and there are also several surprises in store for readers. If you enjoy science fiction or mystery stories, you will enjoy this one.
