This is a stand-alone short story.
To me this was an epic adventure of love, magic, and intrigue condensed into a short story, yet I didn’t feel cheated. Actually, I don’t like the traditional “epic adventures” because they tend to be long-winded and repetitive without going much of anywhere quickly. This is the solution. I loved the length of the book. I loved the story. I loved the characters and the (semi-expected) conclusion.
After reading Last Alpha, I had commented that I wondered if the relaxed pace was the norm for Ruby Fielding. I have my answer and it is a resounding yes. Even when I was holding my breath at certain events, I still never felt unsafe or hurried. I have the feeling that Ruby is the person you want nearby when there is an emergency. Calm, unflappable …. Is this an accurate description of you, Ruby? I’ve been around people like that in an emergency. Urgency can be conveyed without the feeling of panic. That is what this story makes me feel – urgency without panic.

Marla lives in the Fringe of the City. She doesn't really remember how she got there, only that she is. She is sure she use to live in the city and that she had somehow escaped when the city was taken over by the Nords from the north. Now she scavanges the middens, mountainouse heaps of waste from the city, for metal, glass, paper and food. She has a habit of dazing off into daydreams. She isn't sure why this happens to her, it is uncontrolable. Then there are the other dreams, the dreams where she dreams of "him". She doesn't know his name, but she knows that she knows him.
When the Raiders come, leaving behind death and distruction, Marla hides in the middens. Only to be caught when she goes back to the settlement to see if she can do anything. She is taken into the city where she meets Eli. Here she finds out who her mysterious dream lover is, Malachi, and Eli is his brother. They have both told her that she is special and they both want her with them. Has Malachi been using her as Eli says? Eli wants her to join with him and become a strong force to be reckoned with. Why is she all of sudden seeing energy that she couldn't before? She has to figure out who to trust. She needs to become who she is.
This story has violence, mystery, magic and love.
I highly recommend reading Dreamcaster.
*ARC given for an honest review*
I received an arc for an honest review. This is a story of Marla, and her life, that is not so good. During those horrible times she dreams, of a better time of a better life. And then she is reminded of the life she is really living and the men who took over their town, and burn villages down take the women, kill the men. It is during one of these raids that the dreamcaster comes to her. This story is quite awesome, it takes you in the most unexpected direction, you will have no idea what's coming. It's wonderful to read a book that takes you in so many different directions, you can't wait to see what's next. Give it a read you won't be disappointed.
I have found Ms. Fielding to write paranormal novels that are not commonplace.
Her descriptions are vivid and you find yourself to be part of the story.
Marla a main character has gaps in her memory. She is a day dreamer and she visualizes places that she is unable to remember when fully aware.
Malachi, a dreamcaster, comes to her aid when she is threatened. For some reason he feels familiar to her.
Eli is an evil twin to the goodness of Malachi.
Yes there is some violence and some romance.
This book is an enjoyable read.
I look forward to more of Ms. Fieldings writings
