Editorial Reviews

Rhett Miller has announced the release of his new album, The Dreamer, on June 5. The Dreamer was produced by Miller himself and will be released on his very own Maximum Sunshine Records, distributed by The Orchard. The Dreamer is Miller's sixth solo record and represents the first time he has ever self-produced. In the past, Miller's solo efforts were dramatically different from his work with the Old 97's. While the band's songs are often steeped in Americana and country, the solo records have always been decidedly more rock and pop affairs. That is until now, as The Dreamer finds the Texas-bred, New York-based singer/songwriter marrying his two worlds like never before.

Rhett Miller's "The Dreamer" is not a pop opus. It is not an all out roller coaster of rowdy galloping songs.

What "The Dreamer" is, however, is a collection of warm, heartfelt, beautifully written songs. I think "The Dreamer" is Rhett's most cohesive release to date. The songs speak for themselves and invite the listener in to the world Miller created. These songs, rather than being autobiographical, are vignettes about love lost, love found, and growing old in love. They paint pictures of people who have seen better days, and people who don't think they'll see a day better than the one we hear within roughly 3:00 minutes.

Rhett's vocals are as diverse throughout the record as they've ever been. He really sets the tone on this record in the way he sings the songs. On "Complicated Man", Rhett's voice adds immediate fragility. The duet with Roseanne Cash is fabulous, and could rival any classic country duet. "Swimming In Sunshine" is sweet and perfect for those days at the pool this summer.

Rhett and the musicians on this record really put their hearts in this record, with a few listens you can tell. It's worth it. Pick up this record if you're on the fence about it.

Rhett Miller's new set has its feet firmly in the country. Perhaps like musical chameleons like Neil Young who give a different flavor to each album outing, that may be what we're seeing. My favorite track is "Out of Love" with Tommy Borscheid's searing electric lead guitar, the song's dark chords & a touch of the blues added like a spice to a musical recipe, "I'm only home away from home; I'm only all there when I am gone, I only miss you when I'm with you, I'm only happy when I sing a sad sad song." "Sleepwalkin'" is another delight with Rachel Yamagata's vocals and Rhett's wry delivery of his insanely original lyric, "She was a genius, She'd won awards & stuff, I was intimidated, She had a prominent nose, She took off all her clothes, I was infatuated." Written and sung with Rosanne Cash, "As Close As I Came to Being Right" elicits the most emotionally direct vocal performance from Miller, "I thought you were the moon to lighten up these empty rooms; I thought you were the sun shining down on everyone but me; I thought you were the night & that's as close as I came to being right." While not all tracks on this set are equally strong, it has its share of gorgeous gems. Enjoy!

Rhett is one of my favorite solo artists. I was actually worried when I heard this album might be a little more country than I like (I'm not a country guy at all), but this was great stuff. The pedal steel on some tracks is too twangy for my tastes, but Rhett did it again. Brilliant songwriter.
