Contrary to others who write reviews based solely upon their political leanings (especially those willing to give only one star), this book is a well written work of historical fiction/biography. It is very much on par in quality with something like Ken Follet's works...regardless of what you think of him politically...but is not full of indecent language and indecent content simply to widen a reader base.

Beck draws out historically accurate points for each of the people in this book, and provides fascinating back story to some of the glossed over or taken-for-granted events in history. He in no way sugarcoats the 'good guys', or makes villains of the 'bad'. He states things the way they happened and leaves the reader to decide where to see the good and bad in each example.

Learning the true stories, that no one knows about some of the people that helped shaped America. Stories about people like Desi Arnaz, Walt Disney and Steve Jobs. Learning why a Ponzi Scheme is called a Ponzi scheme, learning about the early days of radio and about the guy who actually invented the computer. Dreamers and Deceiver, lets you explore the history of people; we probably never give much thought about but who may have effected our lives in at least some seemingly small way like Grover Cleveland.

While I haven't read the entire book, I have read enough to comfortably say that this book is highly informative and entertaining. Many people will discount the book from the start, just from the name on the dust jacket, but that would be a mistake. The stories inside involve some well-known, and many unknown characters, who contributed great things to the shaping of this country. The stories are well written in a format that lends itself to casual reading, but if one were so inclined, could lead to more serious research on the topics discussed. If you have a history nerd (like me) in your life this book would be a good purchase.

Overall, I think the book is good to obtain a knowledge of the events that transpired in history. Perhaps 4 stars for that. History is an important subject that is neglected by many. Those who read this book will benefit from those events presented in it.

On the other hand, being a person who enjoys history (just the facts ma'm), I did not like the imagined conversations / events being presented. After reading two chapters I had to look up a reference and learned that conversations were made up in a number of instances. A book and movie are two different things. I can go to a movie and expect Hollywood to make dramatic changes in order to sell entertainment. Although this book may present a reliable historical conclusion, I thought the book was solely a history account. Other than the Disney chapter, I did not read any remaining chapters because of these imagined conversations. The Walt Disney chapter appealed to me due to my wishes to learn the detailed account of EPCOT, how it deviated from its original plans and what its status is today. Althoughh the reason was given for its failures in a few sentences, there were no further details.

Some things just seem to stick in my mind after reading them and I do not wish to wonder later if my recollections were based on fact or not. Two stars because of that.

Glenn Beck, the media mogul, just wrote his latest non-fiction/fiction book called Dreamers and Deceivers. Published (October 2014) on the heels of his previous successful book of stories about the making of America called Miracles and Massacres (2013), this book delves into accounts of some well-known and not-so-well-known individuals who had enormous influence on our society and culture and how we view the world--both positively and negatively.

Beck profiles 10 major individuals in the book. Once you read it, you will be able to answer the following questions among others about them:

Edwin Howard Armstrong: Who is he? What was his relationship with David Sarnoff and Lee de Forest, the early pioneers of radio?

Desi Arnaz: What did he invent that changed the nature of television by establishing a precedent that enabled, for example, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld to earn 400 million dollars?

Grover Cleveland: What medical condition did this president have that forced him to slander and try to professionally discredit journalist E.J. Edwards?

Walt Disney: What project did he consider at age 63 to be the most important thing he would ever do?

Alger Hiss: What role did the infamous mobster Frank Costello play in connection with this notorious Cold War spy?

Steve Jobs: After owning Pixar for less than 10 years, how much money had Jobs lost investing in the company?

Carlo Ponzi: What was the scheme that Ponzi foisted on investors (hint: it involves the post office), and how much money in today's dollars did he bilk investors out of?

Dreamers and Deceivers was an extremely enjoyable book, I couldn't put I down. Although I was amazed and irritated at the selfish and egotistical antics of the Deceivers, (mostly political types, no surprise there), it was the heart wrenching stories of people like Desi Arnez, Steve Jobs, and Walt Disney that reminded me that it is truly the dreamers who have made our world a better place.

I particularly enjoyed the many occasions where the Deceivers were finally outed for the crooks they were. There were also many sad moments when the good guy didn't have the strength to endure long enough to see the truth revealed. I won't spoil any of the stories for those who haven't read the book yet. I highly and enthusiastically recommend this book. Phill Wright, author Not Without Mercy The Black Death. Available on amazon.com.
