I felt like I was reading the journal of a stalker for the first few chapters as the main character admits following this poor guy around. I felt the way the book was written that it was more of a typical romance with a Christian fiction jacket on, as it wasn't really written from a religious standpoint. Although there were some other things in the book that gave me an eye roll or two, I felt like the author did her best to give her audience a pleasing experience and wrote a cute story that was fun to read so close to Christmas. It was light and didn't require a lot of concentration and was perfect for a lazy evening by the fireplace.
Katelyn Palmer is a romantic fiction author who made the mistake of fasioning the hero of her first bestseller after her college crush. When Shane Hunter, said college crush, storms into town threatening to sue the author Katelyn panics and denies every knowing of him at all. Shane has a lot going on in life, he heads a major company and recently found himself the sole parent of four year old twins.
Ms. Higgins masterfully painted a full cast of characters from delightful twins to an evil sister-in-law. I loved the unfolding romance as Shane and Katelyn become unlikely friends and blunder through trust issues, imbezzlement schemes, and trouble causing relatives. A great, lighthearted read for the Christmas season!
Katelyn Palmer based the hero in her first romance novel on Shane Hunter -- the man on whom she had a massive crush in college. Unfortunately, she used his real name, his likeness on the cover, and several true stories, all told to Katelyn by Shane's vindictive SIL (reject #1). Said reject, Tori, is now using the book as "proof" that Shane was having an affair while he was married to Tori's late sister. Tori is intent on taking Shane's children from him, under the guise of being a loving aunt, of course.
Shane wants to know how the writer of a romance book knows so much about him, and why she used his name, his likeness and his life without his permission! He wants to sue someone! When he meets the writer, Katelyn Palmer, aka Chelsea Mitchell, he can't believe his luck; he sets out to charm the truth out of her. With the experiences Shane's had with the women in his life, he doesn't trust Katelyn at all, especially with his niggling doubts about whether or not she based her first hero on him. And yet, he finds himself drawn to Katelyn again and again.
Then there's Mags, Shane's former secretary -- I knew there was something off about her, but couldn't put my finger on it! Nice little twist with her.
I read a couple of reviews that stated they felt the "Christian" part of this Christian romance was just thrown in so the book could be included in the Christian romance category; I strongly disagree. The references to God and faith were exactly the right level for this story. For me, the theme of forgiveness, redemption and returning to God was the perfect setting for Shane Hunter.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good, clean romance, with not one but TWO nasty villainesses!
