Violet Moore is in love with a man who hates her.
Well, to be fair, she kinda deserves it.
On her eighteenth birthday, she got drunk and threw herself at him, causing a huge scandal in their sleepy suburban town.
Now everyone thinks she's a slut and he has disappeared. Rumor has it that he's been living up in the mountains of Colorado, all alone and in isolation.
But Violet is going to make it right.
She's going to find him and bring him back.
No matter how cruel and mean he is, how much he hurts her with his cold-hearted and abrasive ways, she won't give up.
And neither will she think about his tempting lips or his sculpted muscles or his strong hands. The hands that she wants on her body, touching her, feeling her skin...
The hands that make her want to forget everything and kiss Graham Edwards - Mr. Edwards, actually - again.
Because you don't go around kissing your best friend's dad, do you?
Even though that's all you ever dream about.

I’m not going to beat around the rose bush but I will tell you that this is the best book I have ever encountered in 2019, by this author period, since I first started devouring novels ever, and when I am 90 years old I will demand and insist that if you read only one book in your life, definitely make it Dreams of 18— a story that is hopelessly romantic, thrilling, and dark, and beautiful, standing out as edgy taboo in the juggernaut of contemporary fiction.
About the book and characters:
Violet Moore: is a teenager who on the surface has a privileged childhood complete with a brittle and distracted mother and a sister who needs to be the center of attention at any cost. This is just the stucco exterior though, deeper Violet is an old soul, a lover of vintage music and the moon, lollipop eater, dear diary keeper, tree climber, star seeker from on roof tops at 2 am..... sadly all these qualities that make her wonderfully strange are seen as nuisance to her mother and sister alike. Violet tires her best to navigate this world with sharp edges while keeping her own desires dormant, until she sees the next door neighbor Mr. Edwards...and that is when need starts to bloom. (oh also Mr. Edwards is a bit older—minor detail)
The next two years are a mixture of stolen moments and glances and roses, Violet even steals the scent on his T-shirts. Her disguise to hide her obsession is frail and eventually a scandal breaks when she and Mr. Edwards are discovered sharing an accidental kiss the night of her 18th birthday.
The events that follow are what happens when one moment (as opposed to the 34 million random things you did but no one cared about), ruins your entire life, dismantling it piece by pieces and ultimately defines how society sees you.
Sticks and stones can break your bones but words and spun rumors will forever curse you:
In the aftermath Violet develops horrible panic attacks, crippling social anxiety and Mr. Edwards in turn leaves his job, the town, and goes into hiding becoming an ill tempered reclusive curmudgeon (well seclusion only makes him hotter so readers should fret not).
A bunch of stuff that happens next:
I’m not going to spoil the book but to sum it the rest of the story is about breaking that curse, finding beauty, and making the world feel like a safe place again for both Violet and Mr. Edwards.
Reflections:
Kent’s books have always been a play of classic works and fairy tales. In this case, Dreams of 18 is an amalgam of Beauty and the Beast and a bit of Lolita (with all the delectable guilt but minus the breaking the law part) oh and Little Red Riding-hood (Mr. Edwards has big eyes and big hands and ahem ahem big everything else).
What I loved the most:
All of Kent’s characters are radically honest and vulnerable; this is a strength not a weakness in a world we become distorted by other people’s judgment. And when it comes to being women navigating sexuality between what feels like society’s two approved choices of A- "slutty" or B- "prude”. Saffron’s Violet offer another alternative. She maybe just who you want to be when you transcend as a female and leave all these forces feed notions behind becoming just you, a woman with her own wants.
The prose in the book is also nearly lyrical and this author really know how to takes the simplest of words like “honey”, “baby” “bad”, ”red” “rose”, and just unravel the ordinary into something sacred, captiviting as a drop of ink blooming in a glass of water. Kent may claims not be a poet but I still consider her writing a kind of word sorcery.
Favorite line:
“I’m hopeless and I’m a romantic. I’m a masochist. I’m addicted to less. I’m addicted to the pain. I’m addicted to him.”
To end, I highly recommend reading Dreams of 18. It’s a book about two people reclaiming something taken from them; their safety, their dreams, and needs and love because age is really just a number. So while Violet and Graham go looking for their souls in the lines of each other’s bodies, you might find a little missing part of your own right there with them. I sure did.
The book opens up with Violet’s perspective. She’s allergic to strawberries yet loves to eat them because it allows her to feel alive, and she has a sad home life. Yes, she has a mother, a father, and a sister, but she doesn’t feel the love that any normal person should be feeling when they have the family that she does. Her mother was going to abort her because she’s the product of an affair, which means her dad doesn’t care for her, and she’s never really been close to her sister. When she’s 16, they get new neighbors- a sexy father, Graham, and a son that’s the same age as her. Immediately, Violet is drawn to the older man, but because she’s underage, she doesn’t do anything with her feelings. In fact, she becomes close friends with the son, Brian.
As time passes, she kind of stalks him, biding her time until she turns 18. She learns a lot about him in the two years that she’s gotten close to Brian, and on the night of her 18th birthday, she kisses him. She’s willing to risk it because it’s dark, and no one will notice, but her sister and Brian catch them, pictures are taken, and they are spread all over social media. Graham is the football coach and end up leavings the job and eventually moves away because of all the gossip and drama that comes about from this innocent kiss. Violet also gets s!#¥ shamed, which takes a toll on her mental health.
Violet suffers from social anxiety, adding on the stress from the aftermath of the kiss breaks her, so she ends up being institutionalized at Heartstone. 10 months after the kiss, Violet decides that she wants to apologize to Graham and ends up driving to where he’s at, to a different state. When she arrives, he receives her with the same grumpiness as ever, only this time, things are different. This time, the smexual tension is THICKKK… and I was here for it 👏🏻.
OH… MY… GOSH! SAK knows how to build tension and chemistry🤤. Jeeezus, Lord🔥, have mercy on my poor kindle and the steamy as f pages in this book… how I have a working kindle after all of that heat is a wonder in itself😅 🔥🥵. The connection between Violet and Graham is so damn visceral and intense that it blew my expectations out of the park! Age gap? WHAT age gap? Age is JUST a number… and this book definitely proves it! When there’s a connection THIS intense, nothing else matters 😅👏🏻😉. And the use of a Lollipop… GEEEZUS 🔥🥵😅
Does the stigma of an older man and younger woman follow them? Yup… but SAK addresses this so beautifully that I didn’t question their HEA. Plus, she doesn’t cower away from the mental health issues that Violet has. In fact, she does it justice by allowing us to feel everything she was feeling and didn’t mask the seriousness of it. Also, she lets us know that finding a man and getting a happily ever after doesn’t necessarily mean that these issues will go away. There is work that needs to be put in in order to overcome these obstacles, and it all takes time.
Their HEA is so swoooony! I downloaded the deleted scene. I hope to find some surprises there 👀
Overall, I loooooved this book! Highly recommended 🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰

-no cheating/omd/owd
-buuuut the h does see the H kiss OW when she goes to see him after he moved away. It’s such a quick scene and at this point, there’s no relationship between the H and h
-mental health issues/anxiety

I enjoyed the story, the dual POV at times, so we got to see inside Graham’s thoughts and history, as well as a good background foundation for their budding relationship that develops. I absolutely believed the scorching hot chemistry and I embraced whole heartily Graham’s dirty mouth! He had a wonderfully fabulous dirty mouth.

My only niggle was and it was purely on me the reader, I wanted a conclusion to the sister. She was an intrinsic part of the reason why the h felt the way she did. She was mean, overly critical and bitchy. She caused the blow up!
She even had a relationship with the BFF. Then it just disappeared. I was expecting some kind of fall out from this later in the story. It just didn’t happen. So that’s the only reason I docked half a star. I needed retribution for her horrid behaviour.
Also I felt that the h forgave the H near the end. Far too easily for what he did.

What drives the story? Mental warfare comes to mind. Individual battles fought within the heads of the main characters propel the story onward. The dual POV worked brilliantly. Violet’s anxiety was palpable. Saffron A. Kent did a spectacular job portraying Violet as a whole person instead of just ‘an anxious girl’. Yes, Violet was anxious. She was also gutsy, persistent and passionate. The glimpses into Mr. Edwards troubled mind were just as powerful. So much emotion! So much passion!
‘Dreams of 18’ is one of those books that left me feeling good about myself. It celebrates individuality. So what if I ‘dance to the beat of a different drummer’. At least I danced.

Dreams of 18 had great potential, it started off really well. but the sex scenes weren't for me they were overdone and to descripive for me to fully enjoy them. I love dirty talking alpha men but Mr Edwards unfortunately didn't do it for me.
I actually liked him as a character despite the cringy dirty talking.
Violet was interesting, I liked her stubborn streak the way she didn't back away easily. But her dirty mouth didn't fit her character for me either.
I will admit as the book progressed the connection between Violet and her Strawberry Man did grow on me, they had some sweet moments that I felt they needed to balance and grow their relationship outside of the bedroom.
The story was still an enjoyable read, and I'm sure it will be some people's read of the year. It's just not my favourite from this Author.

I don’t remember the last time I read a book with almost 500 pages within one night. I kept telling myself: Just one more chapter - after every chapter 🤷🏽♀️ so thank you @thesaffronkent for making me look like zombie today, it was soooo damn worth it 🖤
„Dreams of 18” is my first book of 2020 and I am sooo glad I started my year with this story. I love it. The characters, story developmemt, slow-building tension between Violet and Graham. I love their denial, insecurities and most of all I love how they complete each other. Behind the steamy romance hides a beautiful, well-written love story of two broken and lost people. Two lonley, introverted souls who long to be lonley together.
This book is a #rollercoasteroffeelings and sure has hell... it’s steamy🔥like the pages literally burn 🔥🙆🏽♀️ I’ve been waiting a really long time to read it, and it was definitely worth it. 5/5⭐️ Steamy, sexy, simply amazing.
