Guys, ladies I just read the other reviews and I wanted to mention something that was a bit lacking. There are some excellent reviews. And please, be very careful of some of these reviewers who tell you the whole plot in the review. I am thoroughly entertained and these are fun reviews (so reviewers who enjoy entire plot-cliff notes, go ahead and continue doing your thing). But read those type of reviews AFTER you watch the movie! Now, to get to my review. As I said, what some of the other reviews are missing is the sense of what it was like, esp. as a youth, to watch this movie (not in theaters, I rarely got to go at first, then later got to go quite a bit) in the 1980s. Parents in the 1980s had it easier to control content for the kids. I perhaps saw Dreamscape in 1987, edited version on WGN (they were still showing 100 Cubs games a year), one year before I saw Nightmare on Elmstreet One on Showtime. In 87' I also saw Time Bandits. Those two were the first scary movies I got to see in a dark room all by myself. And they both scared me to the point of having frightening dreams. There was a frightening scene in this movie, within the President's set of dreams --> it happened right as a door was opening with an "Exit" sign displayed above. I could not go to sleep thinking of this scene. (Time Bandits - the last 1/5th of the movie after the hero leaves the Giant Island to confront the villain was such a scene as well, leaving imaginary scenarios playing out later that night in bed). In the 80s to early 90s as a youth, your life was mostly in books comics magazines and movies. Computers were exciting in a different way... extremely exciting and amazing, but Ultima / King's Quest 1+2, or 2d NES style platformer (this all changed in 1993 when Doom by ID or Bethesda came out). So this is where this movie came in. There was no internet to check things out, as a modern kid might do. Today's modern children, if they have a movie watcher in the family can read people either debunking / disliking their favorite scary movie characters or endless positive reinforcing pointing out all the nitpicky fun stuff. And me in 1987 to 89? I had transitioned from Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew / 3 Investigators-type books and youth-Alfred Hitchcock ghost tales and Trivia type "Incredible" facts books straight to about three years worth of really scary experiences. The books I read set up a gullibility-of-sorts that let my imagination run wild with a movie like Dreamscape. I believed it must be real! Same with Friday the 13th, Night of the Creeps, Nightmare on Elmstreet 1+2, Return of the Living Dead and Fright Night. The weird thing is, this was the perfect (and unfortunate in some ways, fortunate in others) three of the last years that such a child's upbringing was possible. That is because around 1989 to 1990 Nightmare on Elmstreet 3 + 4 were beginning to come to cable channels more often (they came out in 87 and 88, but those days it took one year for them to make it to HBO or Showtime). Guess what, these horror films had quite a bit of comedy in them. When I saw the early 1990s comedy-scary movies, along with playing Doom / strategy games like Civilization+Master of Orion / and the more complex SNES games like Super Metroid and Soulblazer -- ZAP, movies were not ever as scary again. So, fellow future-witch-leaders-of-America, I am glad I gave you the background to what made this movie so frightening. There was no contrast at the time! A gullible kid like me was too scared to ask the parents. I developed a friendship, later on, to start figuring out what the urban-myths were in life and gradually many of the falsehoods began to dissipate. Now as for the witches of the 1887 magic lodge "Golden Dawn," I believe this is more than a remote possibility. This movie portrays some realistic witches and the friendly allies that are trying to aid or hinder them that do not manifest the witch-psychic abilities. I would imagine many fans of reading occult literature such as Dion Fortune or H.P. Blavatsky or Christopher Hyatt or Timothy Leary or Robert Anton Wilson would love to watch this movie. Being a witch should be a celebration, but this movie shows you that if humans evolve and more of us start to manifest the seeds burgeoning into something more potent, there will be the parasite types along for the ride to try to cause damage to enrich more $$$ exclusively for others that only think about their tribe. Much like I said in my review for D.A.R.Y.L. (REMEMBER, go to the public profile page by clicking on the icon next to the reviewer name, then page down all the way to the bottom of the page for all the reviews a person has ever written to pop up -- this is how Amazon is in 2022 at least?), this is a movie meant for children! Please, use your coven-leader-13 bargaining skills to get your child to watch an old film when he or she is still of a youthful age. Agree to watch a likely-low-IQ-tired 2022 era film or tv show in exchange for bargaining to force your daughter or son to watch this movie - this version on Amazon has no nudity and should be appropriate for a 10-year-old. Engage with your daughter or son. Write up a question and answer sheet to discuss the movie's unique and peculiar dream-settings (why is the sky red and the buildings damaged in the president's dreams * gently confront your daughter or son to explain why Alex aka DENNIS QUAID for 1/2 the film is enviously or jealously confronted multiple times by Tommy aka DAVID KELLY * when CIA thug Bob Blair aka CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER makes several claims over the course of the movie that his political power won't diminish, what does this mean...). To my fellow beloved witches, thank you for taking the time to read this review. I feel blessed!

Nifty sci-fi with Dennis Quaid and Max von Sydow!
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018
This is a 1984 science fiction movie combining dreams, psychics, and a plot to kill the President. It stars Dennis Quaid as a young psychic who becomes involved with a government project that projects him into other people's dreams. The researchers believe this will help them to treat patients with sleep disorders and other psychological problems. The government, of course, wants to turn it into a new method of espionage and assassination. Kate Capshaw co-stars as a doctor also working on the dream project, and Quaid's love interest.
The supporting cast in this movie reads like a who's-who of older stars. They include Max Von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, and Eddie Albert. Because of this, the scenes where these polished veterans interact are basically what saves the film. Quaid comes across as a brash, egotistical airhead who is more interested in saving his own butt than in any kind of altruism, and Capshaw's character is never given a chance to grow out of its project assistant cubbyhole. There are a couple of bright spots. The first is David Patrick Kelly as a homicidal psychic also involved in the dream project, who gives just the right amount of understated menace to his character. The other is George Wendt, known for his work on the television series Cheers, as an author doing research on the secret government project.
However, even this stellar cast cannot keep this film from trapping itself in its own doldrums. The concept is great, the special effects are fantastic for their time, but the script lacks scope and the characters lack depth. On the whole, this is a good film, but it could have been a great one.

Just the thought of being able to do what Dennis Quaid does is mind blowing. You have people who can travel out of body but into someone else's dream and actively participate, how amazing would that be? The movie is old so no fancy CGI but I think it's a classic.

I am glad to own this movie again. I did have it on VHS until it got messed up.
I like these kind of movies, this one is pretty decent. There really isn't that much blood shed. So don't worry.
Alex is a gambler, & uses his so called gift. He has his friends & foes.
The beginning with the presidents daughter running from the atomic bomb, & the president just having a bad dream will soon become the focus on the movie. & that someone wants him out of the way.
The movie is scary. & gives you an inside look at what our world would like after a nuclear explosion.
There is at least 5 different dreams Alex experiences, first having an accident with a skyscraper,
first encounter with the evil snake man, & helping a couple resolve a love affair problem.
Having learned that young Alex will eventually become a threat, Bob Blair (Christopher Plumber) wants him dead & out of the way. & he & his employees are willing to do anything to takeover the dream research company, & kill Alex,
& Paul (Max Von Shadow).
& once becoming a professional & not needing the machine Alex must focus all his talents,
& stop Tommy Ray who has gone psycho & Bob Blair, & save the president before its too late.
The movies great. Terrific scares. You got great music in the movie that kind of music that almost makes you feel as if your visiting a haunted house. & all the unusual things that can only happen in the dream world. & don't worry that's not always true what Bob Blair said (when you dream that you die you die in life, during the dream before you get out of your dream). I've dreamed that I've died. & I'm still alive & well.
& I recommend it to anyone.
Its what I call decent horror movie.

Reviewed in Spain on February 12, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent !
Reviewed in France on August 29, 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamscape
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 14, 2012
I last saw this film many years ago, during my mid-teens and I really enjoyed it. So I ordered it out of nostalgia. But unlike many 80's films that seemed really watchable, back in the day, but now struggle to keep you interested, this still has the ability to entertain without it seeming too cheesy or kitch.

Dreamscape has the right blend of 80's action, a well paced script that combines the interesting notion: of exploring the subconscious mind, with good old fashioned sci-fi rubber monsters, a love interest for the hero and a vivid post-apocolyptic wasteland. Mix this up with Dennis Quaid's boyish charm and enthusiastic performance, a smoldering Kate Kapshaw, (before she became all screamy & irritating in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) and we have the ingredients of a very watchable 80's Sci-Fi type film.

The special effects are of their time, but don't let that put you off. Personally that's one of the reasons I'm very fond of this film.
(It's no bad thing to appreciate the skill and artistry of the special effects dept, doing great things with a modest budget.) Amusing and cleverly made creatures e.g. the 'Snakeman' and post-apocolyptic deformed children, can still make you jump.

There are many striking scenes and imaginative ideas in this film. For example, the haunting stage sets of a post apocolyptic America and a little boy's dream of a nightmare house, taking it's influence from German Expressionist films like 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligary' always lend a bespoke look to the film and are much better than the overley complex CGI stuff we get now days.

The premise is that Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid), a talented but slacker-type psychic, is recruited by Dr Paul Novotny (Max Von Sidow) to secretly help & protect the American president from ever increasingly traumatic nightmares. The president is at risk of being assasinated in his dream and thereby dying in real life. A sinister young psychic, Eddie Albert, recruited by corrupt government official Christopher Plummer, is a hired assassin, ready to bring about the president's downfall. Albert's performance adds another good character (80's villain) to the film. Quaid initially reluctant to take part in Von Sidow's plan, sucombes to a combination of blackmail & a subtle father & son type relationship and inevitabley has a showdown with the psychotic Albert ina dreamscape, whilst trying to protect the president from being murdered.

There are many amusing moments in the film and it never looses it's pace and direction. Considering you can buy this for less that a tenner and delivery was less that ten days (American import Region 2) it's well worth buying. For anyone who likes 80's Sci-Fi/Horror this is a decent title to add to your DVD collection.
