This engraver works incredibly well. Although it looks unweildy, its very easy to control and engrave clearly. In fact, my engravings turned out to look just like my handwriting. I've used it to engrave tools and other metal and steel products, and it has done it with ease. I've had one for several years now, and its still an excellent & reliable engraver.

I got this as a Christmas present, and just now used it for the first time to engrave my cellphone. I had been wondering how easy it would be to control, but am glad to report that the result was as small & legible as what can be achieved with pen and paper.

I bought this engraver with birthday money from a discount store last fall, after researching it online. It will leave its mark on just about anything you would want. I like the variable speed settings which allows you to match the work to the material. I have used it to initial all my tools so there is no mistaking who it belongs to. It works on hardened steel as well as plastic. My wife uses it for craft projects in her pre-school teaching job.

The tool works fine. Note that the cutting tip is the important 'business end' of this tool. It is supplied with a general purpose point tip, great for writing your name on something. But you can put any tip in there you want--and it will make a difference. You can buy other Dremel tips or make your own. You can easily reshape the provided tip into a more traditional engraving style. By the way the packaging states that the tool is made by Bosch in Mexico for Dremel. It's a bit loud, pretty much like all electric engravers though. If you want depth to your engraving the tool can do it, you just have to repeatedly go over (and over, and over) your design. The variable stroke length does help but frankly doesn't make a large difference in most metals and you give up some tool control on the higher settings.

My use for this is to "Sign" finished pieces of wood art. Other engravers I have had were clumsy to hold. This one is very good.

Engraver works just fine for the price. The letter and number template included with the engraver is useless due to the fact the slots are too small for the engraver to penetrate to the surface.

The carbide tip is held in the chuck with a small set screw. The chuck is low quality aluminum and the set screw tore out the threads of the chunk before it even started to tighten down.

UPDATE:

I gave this a one star at first because I felt a little cheated because I didn't see the free 9924 engraving point that was supposed to be included, then felt really bad once I found the missing 9924 so I'm updating it. This might have happened to others who bought this item and complained about the same thing. The product does come with a free 9924, but it's a small piece. They placed it within the plastic packaging. Therefore, if you unwrapped it and threw away the plastic, you also threw out your free piece. See the picture for more details.

I tried it...it works great! It's a bit difficult to switch out the engraving points. The screw holding the piece in place is very small so you have to be careful not to drop that sucker. You sort of need a special, small and strong screw driver to remove it, so be aware of that. Also, I suggest to remove it on a table with a cloth on top so if you do drop the screw you can find it... I'm calling it a screw because that's the only name for it...But that this super tiny...can't stress that enough. I'm new to this game, but I have a feeling I'll be using this thing a lot! Great for the price!

I just received it, therefore I haven't tried it. However, how can I try the machine when it is missing the tip. "The included 9924 carbide engraving point ensures precise result." > NOT INCLUDED

I plugged it in and it makes a very loud noise. I think this is normal...but its my first engraving tool so I don't know.
There is no way of contacting Dremel so I hope they see this review and contact me because I'd like the tip please.

I won't change my review until I receive the piece I was promised.

Thanks...and for the rest of you fine people out there..beware or at least know to buy the tip separate.
