What’s the different between the Dremel 4000 & the Dremel 3000?

The 4000 features a separate on/off switch. The switch also prevents accidently activation of the shaft lock button. The separate Variable Speed Control dial on the 4000 can also be adjusted in 1000 rpm increments.

What is Electronic Feedback Control?

Electronic Feedback control is designed to bring the tool back to the selected speed when the accessory meets the materials. This feature helps prevent the tool from stalling, particularly at lower speeds.

Husband begged me for one of these, He uses it for everything he can possibly get his hands on!

So it all started when he needed to grind down a part - so he started researching and decided he needed a rotary tool. After all his reasearch he realized the best quality one on the market was this Dremel. He then started leaving me "subtle" hints - first texting me the link to the product, then ever so casually mentioning how much he could get done if he just had this one tool - followed by telling me that it was a necessity and finally explained why the tool was such a great value. Whats a girl to do? I ordered it. He then proceeded to ask me every 4 hours or so how long it would take to arrive. Well thanks Amazon for two day shipping! I handed him the box and he ran to the garage to play... I have not seen him in days - I have no idea what he's doing with it, I just know he is happier than a tornado in a trailer park. I am going to have to start calling myself a "Dremel Widow" if anyone knows of a support group for such conditions i'd appreciate it.

Dremel - Excellent Quality, This is a good quality basic set that gives you everything you need to get going. Great carry case keeps even the most persnickety organizer happy.

I bought this dremel at the ‘New’ price, but am pretty sure I got a refurbished one. Everything seemed happazardly put in the case, one of the accessories was in a zip-loc bag, the dremel itself has dings like it had been used and the manufacturers box had been re-glued with hot glue. If I’m paying the new price for an item, I expect it to be new.

A note about collets

A fair number of reviews here discuss issues that buyers had with the collet on this Dremel. I just bought this model, and think I may understand the problem that at least some users ran into.

First, a word about terms. The solid shaft that the cutting or grinding tool is mounted on is the mandrel (or Dremel also calls it an accessory shank). When you install the cutter on the Dremel, this mandrel slides into a silver-colored hollow tube called the collet. The dark-metal nut that encases the collet and screws onto the unit is the collet nut.

All of the accessories that come with this Dremel model use 1/8"-diameter mandrels/shanks. Most other accessories that Dremel sells also use this size, although some use 3/32", 1/16" or 1/32" shanks.

When my Dremel 4000 arrived, I noticed that none of the included 1/8" shanks fit into the collet. I think some of the other buyers who ran into this problem concluded at this point that their Dremels came with the wrong-sized collet.

However, when I took it apart a little I found that the collet had just been jammed tightly into the collet nut, closing down its diameter so that the shanks wouldn't fit. I unscrewed the collet nut from the Dremel and used a small screwdriver to push the collet out of the back end of the collet nut. This allowed the collet to open up to its full diameter; all of the included shanks now fit.

So, if you buy one of these and it seems as though the shanks don't fit into the collet, give this a try before you conclude it's the wrong size. Dremel could probably stand to do a little quality control on this to make sure everything works smoothly. If you do actually need a different collet size for other mandrels/shanks not sold with this kit, Dremel sells a 4485 Collet Nut Kit (about $6-$7 in 2015 at hardware stores) that has the four collet sizes listed above.

This is the 4th Dremel tool of this type I've owned. The first lasted for decades of heavy use. The last 3 haven't been worth owning. The reliability of these makes them worthless. I've held off and buying other products because of cost, but it would have been worth it since I keep having to replace them. This one isn't quite 2 years old and has been lightly used (unlike the first one I bought). Got it out last night and discovered the speed controller had failed - it only runs at full rpm no matter what you set. On top of that, it has no torque any longer. I will not be buying another Dremel tool ever. Wherever they've outsourced their manufacturing too has ruined the quality.

I am a 59 year old lifelong wood worker and DIY'er. My home shop is equipped with every tool imaginable but I have never owned a Dremel tool. I bought this tool when I had to cut some unsupported shower tile to access a leaking bypass valve. I was skeptical but it cut the tile much more easily than I had expected. The fact that it is a rotary tool allowed me to cut the unsupported shower tile without applying pressure that might have broken it. That would have been a small disaster as the shower tile is 15 years old and we don't have any matching replacement tiles. It worked so well I have subsequently used the Dremel tool to make several cuts in drywall. I am using it this coming weekend to cut a window into the metal column of my drill press to install a counter weight for my drill press table. This tool is my new must have tool! I can't wait to try it on some wood carving projects I have been thinking about!

Good Kit But Missing All Collets Needed For Most Jobs

At a glance this looks like a complete kit, but is missing most sizes of collets. If you read the instructions for collets in the pic that is included with this review, It apparently only comes the 1/8 size collet... which is weird and an unnecessary oversight.. it can't be that expensive to include the other 3 sizes.

Most of my drill bits etc do not fit the single collet included. Now I have to go out of my way and try to find or order a collet kit somewhere, possibly on Amazon. Hindsight I would have order another kit as this one doesn't say on the box that it only comes with one..... that doesn't fit most of the drill bits and other attachments.

All in all the Dremel 4000 is powerful and works great... just this one minor faux pas!

This is the third Dremel I have owned in the last thirty years and there always seems to be more in the box than the last one. I use this tool a lot and my last tool probably would have lasted longer if I had been a little more conscientious in replacing the motor brushes before I wore them out completely and ruined my tool. The tactile surface on the tool is great for grip but fine dust will stick to it so I have to wipe the tool off after most uses with a slightly dampened cloth. Great assortment of accessories and a very well designed storage tote with a place for everything. Not my first Dremel purchase and likely not my last. There are a variety of Dremel tool kits at various prices so you can get the one with the accessories you use and not have to buy things you'll probably never have a use for. This is the "Swiss Army Knife" of tools.
