To get my dogs used to dremel, I just turned it on at first and let them get used to the sound. Then I put it on their nails for a few seconds just so they could feel the vibration. It wasn't long before they accepted me grinding down their nails this way. The trick is to keep it on the nail just a few seconds or the friction will get too hot
If you do leave it on the nail too long, the dog will notice the heat (causing it to move) and you could also cut too close. Even if you grind too far though, the friction stops the blood so my dogs still prefer this to traditional clippers. Just be careful not to get it too close to your dog's hair or it can get wrapped in their fur which scared me and the dog both. I've only had that problem with my shelties though as pugs have short hair.
Overall though, no regrets on this purchase as it has saved me money from going to the groomers and the dog's nails are much smoother than traditional clippers. I use this product on the low setting so it doesn't vibrate as much and it works fine for my needs. Definitely wish I had got this sooner.
I do wish it had a plastic attachmentment to go around the tool on 3 sides (like a competitor's pet tool) as my dogs sometimes try to lick it while I'm using it on their nail. Therefore I usually keep them on their back so their head is generally further away from the tool. Still I think the quality of this product makes it the better purchase and definitely much better than traditional nail clippers which my pets won't tolerate.
The battery charger is also great. I just keep it plugged into the wall and I can easily pull out the battery and put it into the Dremel when I need it. I've never lost power yet so don't know how long it lasts. I guess it lasts long enough. Highly recommended.
Added benefit, one of my dogs has nails that curl under as they grow, looking like a backwards "C" (not normal striaght pointy dog nails). No matter how I clipped they always looked ugly and uncomfortable. The dremel allowed me to shape the nails (I started from underneath) so now they look normal and beautiful and I can see he is SO much more comfortable!
Also, we have a new sofa so shaping with the dremel means no sharp edges to scratch it (or me!).
I LOVE this tool. I ordered the 1/4" dremel mandrel and 120 (fine) grit bands for my dogs because of their size. I dremeled on low power. I let the battery recharge maybe 10 minutes in between dogs, just so it would be full strength (but I honestly didn't really notice a drain on power until maybe 30 minutes of steady use?).
Doberdawn website has a great page thoroughly detailing how to dremel a dog's nails - I highly suggest you read it before you begin as it helps if you know what you're doing and she gives some great tips.
