I purchased the Dremel 3D40 EDU Printer for my classroom. I am a middle school science teacher and robotics coach and my students are always involved in design challenges. I was a bit selective picking the right 3D printer because of the cost and the fact that I had no experience with one. I had taken a professional development course facilitated by NASA personnel and found designing on Tinkercad so engaging. Watching the designs printing out on the machine was quite amazing. We were told at the workshop that 3D print design will be the wave of the future and that it will be a normal part of households in the near future. We were also introduced to a free online Future Engineers Challenge where children could submit their own 3D designs for tools that astronauts might need in space. They actually have a 3D printer on the space station now! This was the final straw that convinced me to dive in!
As a novice, I wanted a machine that was reliable and one in which I would be supported. I have found Dremel has not failed me in either department. In fact, in the very beginning, I did have some issues with clogged extruder that could not be remedied with some quick fixes and the support team arranged for me to mail back the unit free of charge. They returned it quickly and in good working order. I have not had any problems since.
I have called support and used their online chats to help with questions I had about printing and they have always been very patient and helpful. They even offer a free online training for teachers with the EDU model which I did at the start of my journey. Dremel also provides lessons for the classroom but I have not gone that route yet. Rather, we have been using various design challenges to inspire our creations and prints.
I know there is the new 3D45 machine with heated plate that uses different printing mediums now and machines that can print in multiple colors and things of that nature. Perhaps in the future we can add these to our lab. But I still feel the 3D40 is a good startup machine. It is a cool blue color with a clear door to allow for safe viewing while a print is in progress. It is easy to use. The spools are affordable and do hold a good amount. We did get a nice printer cart to keep the materials together which I feel is very useful.
If you are a teacher or a parent thinking about this for your class or family, I can say that it is evident the children are having a blast with this new technology and are engaged in their learning. We even showcase the children's work on Science Nights and those who attend are always in awe of what the children are able to do with their imaginations, some design basics and the Dremel printer!

This is a great printer for a school setting, however if you are thinking about using it in a home setting you may want to consider some alternatives for the price. Out of the box, this is a pretty good printer. Setup is easy, and all the included extras is super nice. You get a nice scraper, several extra build sheet stickers and even a second flex build plate for quick swapping. A jam tool is included, along with a USB drive containing easy to print already sliced models. It took some tuning to get to where I was happy, and I'm sure there is still some room to turn.My takeaways-Autoleveling is amazing. It still requires input from you in the realm of turning a knob but that's only if it asks. Being a contained unit is great, the spool holder on the side holds Dremel filament nicely. You can use your own filament with no problem, you just need to route it in and make sure your spool holder is free to move. The included filament prints great however it seems like all four spools have an issue with brittle filament. This is especially noticeable where the filament enters the extruder. It takes a sharp nearly 90 degree turn and it always breaks right here. It hasn't broken during printing, thankfully but it always seems to break here.The included slicer is built from an older version of CURA, but I would recommend using CURA instead. CURA does not have a profile for this printer so you will have to add it, but its as easy as opening the Dremel slicer and CURA in separate windows and simply copying the printer info and start/stop Gcode over. From there you can use CURA like always and slice to your hearts content.As far as printing goes, I really like the onscreen display that shows how long you have left and a neat filling up picture depending on what you are printing. I would like to have some sort of control beyond stop and pause, a live Z adjust would be great. I did have to go into the settings and adjust the Z by .3 to get a real nice first layer. 0 absolutely squished it and would run the nozzle into the plate. Also cut down the fan speed and when the fan starts, it will really help adhesion and overall appearance. You would think that being in an enclosure would cut down on noise but holy cow is this thing loud! The axis movement alone will haunt my dreams. Everything is lubed, and I run it slow and even then it just churns out the loud. My Z axis also makes a weird crinkling sound, like someone crumbling aluminum foil but I can't see any problem with it.This is a great printer for a classroom, but really only that. If you are looking for a home printer and want the name Dremel, I'd suggest the 3D45 as it has a heated bed which opens the door to other filaments beyond PLA. This a great printer, but only being PLA can be a bit of a chore if you want to build with alternative filaments.
