Technology

How it works?

The Dremel VRT1 is powered by the shop vacuum. Once the tool is connected, and the shop vacuum and VRT1 are turned on, dust intake ports force air through the tool. The air flow through the tool activates internal fans which rotate and spin the accessory. The tool’s speed control ring allows you to adjust the air flow through the fans and the power to the accessory. As the tool works, dust and debris collects in the shop vacuum keeping the work space clean.

It works great on small sculpture models, along with my wet/dry vac hoses. The noise with the vacumn is excessive after a while; so a lot of breaks
are necessary.

I am a lifelong Dremel customer and love their products. This is a notable exception. There is a very real need for a Dremel product that combines its normal utility with dust extraction, but I consider this product to be a total failure. I first spent time with customer service at Dremel. All three representatives told me that the product did not exist. They are not even aware of their own products. I then elevated the interaction to a customer service expert, who was also fairly clueless. After he contacted Dremel engineering, he recommended a specific Shopvac that he said would work with the product. It did not. Torque was minimal, such that the tool was useless. I then spent more time with him, and he recommended a 5 hp Bosch shopvac (2x what it says is necessary). This unit retails for $1000, and is on sale for $600 - in other words, it is an impractically expensive element to complete the system. Despite all of my interactions with Dremel, I have seen no combined system (tool and shopvac) that creates reasonable torque at a reasonable cost. Love Dremel. But stay FAR away from this ineffective and time wasting product.

Using a 12 Gal Rigid Wet/Dry Vac with 145 CFM, it works decently enough to sand the edges of small leather goods I create. The actual vacuuming of debris leaves something to be desired, it gets some but not all of it. I bet it would vacuum debris better with the little clear router attachment installed and used on a flat surface. But I'm not sure if it can create the necessary torque to cut anything.

I use this with my Dyson animal Vac, to add find details to my carvings. With Tungsten Carbide Cutter bits it is fast cutting machine. It is a little hard to use and hold, as I must put the hose over my back and down to the work table, as the dust extractor must be 90^ to the work piece. (Because of the short bits.) With a shop vac it has only 1/2 the power of the Dyson.

I didn't expect much, was still underwhelmed. I put electrical tape over the holes up front to get a little more torque; but in all...if it's not just "buffing" or some REALLY light routing or drilling...pass on this.

A surprising tool that steals its power from my shop vac or the inside vacuum cleaner.

Nice for small simple jobs, depends on your shop vac power !!
