Editorial Reviews

Progressive metalcore act ERRA offer their first full length album w/ Sumerian Records - Drift. Originating in Birmingham, AL, the foursome adopted their name from Akkadian mythology, where Erra is the God of mayhem.

I stayed up till 11pm to listen to this as soon as it got added to my library. I have been jamming the 4 prereleased tracks in constant stream and had high hopes for the subsequent songs.

ERRA has done the human auditory system a huge service by releasing this masterstroke. Rarely these days does an album in this genre space lend itself to a cohesive experience that flows well, yet doesn't feel like 9 slightly altered copies of the same single. Whatever Jesse Cash eats when he wakes up, he should keep eating.

My take is the album is a spiritual journey, called the Drift. At the beginning, the high energy offered by Luminesce is somehow doubled down with Irreversible. Skyline allows some momentary solace from the chaos, with powerful melodies punctuating a lulling intro. Hourglass picks up where Irreversible left you hovering on the edge of flight. Our journey has a sense of timelessness exposed by Hourglass. Orchid is the maturation of the structure surrounding the experience, more complex melodies and screams are intermingled with tasteful chord progressions. After this realization the title track happily sets into a groove from the start that sets the tone for an inexorable pull toward something bigger in culmination. Sleeper is a slight deviation, and if we are sleeping this is a chaotic nightmare that takes place just before Continuum. Continuum begins the pounding march that gets carried on through the end of the album. Safehaven is similar to Skyline in the quiet and peaceful lull to start, and a fervent guitar driven rhythm that makes a 6 minute track feel like a moment. At the end we are indulged by the Hypnotist, and the journey ends in a face full of heavy thumping guitar and a sea of strings, only to begin again... when you hit the repeat button. Which you will.

Honestly when I first heard the first singles "Luminesce" and "Drift", I was legitimately worried that one of my favorite bands had changed their sound for the worse. In previous albums, Erra had always shown awesome displays of technical prowess and a very heavy groove. I had thought they gave it up for a more commercial sound on Drift. I was wrong. The album as a whole is a large step forward for this band. Instead of a more upfront Djent/Prog/Core sound, like they display on previous albums, each song is made of different layers that bring a real fullness to the music. Jesse's guitar playing and range have improved dramatically here, and the new vocalist JT really adds something positive to the sound. I have been a Erra fan since Impulse, and they just keep getting better and better with each release. I can listen to this album all the way through for hours, not one bad song on the whole cd. However I would have to say hands down the best song on this album is "Continuum" Just my opinion, but easily my go to song for the next coming months. Basically, this band's album deserves to be purchased, and this band deserves great things.

I had never really gotten into ERRA's first album, Impulse, but Augment instantly became one of my favorite albums (As an aside, when I first got into Augment I would search online for others to reaffirm my belief it was a great album. While it got good reviews, it didn't seem to get the praise I thought it deserved. Now that Drift has come out, it seems like everyone thinks Augment is the greatest album ever now. Isn't that weird?). Moments of Clarity was a disappointing EP for me, felt rushed from a creative and technical standpoint and I didn't enjoy Ian as a vocalist at all. I was still cautiously optimistic for Drift despite all of the changes to the band. Out of the four singles that were released before the album came out, I found Drift and Hourglass to be underwhelming and Orchid and Luminesce to be amazing. Luckily, this is one of those rare cases where the rest of the album is even better than the singles.

Jesse Cash continues to improve both as a guitarist and singer. His numerous solos are killer and the chorus' are just as catchy as those found on Augment. The bass is more pronounced than ever before, and make a big difference on a few songs. Alex Ballew's drumming is always in step with the guitars, and he knows to take a back seat when the chorus hits. I never got into Texas in July, but JT Cavey is a great fit for ERRA. His screams seem to have little variety, but they always sound good and in my opinion sound very similar to what Garrison would have provided if he was still in the band. The lyrics often come across as too vague to really pinpoint a certain message/theme, but these are the kinds of topics I prefer in lyrics.

I bought this with no hesitation, without hearing anything but one of the released singles. Sure enough, Erra delivered. This album is marvelous, invigorating, and like every album they've made, adds much to the genre. Great music and good people who are excited to talk to fans at shows.

I got goosebumps listening to this cd. Very creative and has a certain sound that no one else has. The guitars, the vocals (cleans and screams), the bass, all great.

I have a system in my car so I notice when they put effort into the bass and this cd bumps.
