I was dreading the nail head part when I settled on this beautiful headboard. I knew it was going to be tedious work, but then I discovered this product. WHAT A GENIUS SOLUTION! The way it works is you nail in the trim every 5th nail head. It's so much faster and really easy. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get that high end look to their furniture.
In case anyone is wondering, the rest of the headboard was made by covering with an eggcrate mattress pad and a drop cloth.
I used wire clippers to snip it where I needed it, and I wasted a few non-holed pieces (so, about 8) to line up the holes at the end of the line and put one tack in the corner where two holed pieces meet. It's not sturdy enough for heavy duty upholstery projects because it's just aluminum or something. If you have a lot of cushioning you need to tack down, buy real upholstery tacks or you'll just get bulges.
This is a great value, though, to get an upholstered look very easily with a bit of planning. A good compromise for a guest bed and covering an ikea headboard, really. (I posted a bad image of the headboard, but you can still see how the trim is tough to get perfectly straight, I think; still looks okay once you get some pillows and bedding on it, though).
Oh, one last thing: the tacks don't always have the power to go in straight. I had a piece of particle board backing under the padding (no foam, just 2 layers of polyfill batting for a tiny bit of poof) and I busted at least 6 or 7 tacks because they wouldn't stand up to being hammered into the particle board. Go slow, use a tack hammer, and be patient. For $15, it worked just fine in the end.
Moral of the story: good value for updating or decorating in straight lines if you have some patience and squint a little when you look at the finished piece. ;)
