All of these parts need to be assembled for playing after a flute is removed from its carrying case... and disassembled for replacement into the carrying case. The parts slip together by gently twisting them into place. (Unlike metal water pipes, musical flutes have no threads connecting their parts.) At times, the connection joints need to be "lubricated" for easy assembly.
Using common Vaseline -- or any other grease, oil, or lubricant -- is detrimental, as these chemicals will tend to attract dust and dirt which can scratch or otherwise damage the delicate fittings. Beeswax or paraffin wax does not attract contaminates, thus I use it as a lubricant.
Another method to effect lubrication: Use common wax paper which is found in most kitchens. It is coated with paraffin. Crinkle a piece of wax paper and gently rub it on both the male and female parts of the connections to provide lubrication.
