The design of the seat is, unfortunately, quite flawed, hence 2 stars. Although the instructions warn, not to use the handles to support weight, the surface of the rise is a flat hard plastic against the porcelain of the bowl. It slides, no matter how frequently you tighten the bolts. A regular toilet seat has small rubber nobs or legs that prevent the seat from moving. The riser seat lacks this. Each day, my mother would say the seat was loose. At first I thought she was pushing against the handles, but she was not. The seat just slides back and forth and the movement is enough to seriously loosen the bolts. The bolts that come with the riser, to replace the regular short bolts [metal or plastic] will not fit all toilet seats. We had to go to the hardware store to buy narrower and longer bolts. In order to rectify the 'sliding flaw' I attached self- adhesive anti-slip shoe slip pad both to the porcelain surface and the base of the riser, directly above it, on both sides of the seat. For the time being, it is holding the seat in place, but added to the cost of the seat. The manufacturers should add little rubber nobs which would resolve the issue.
In the meantime, I suggest you look at other risers.

- Easy to install. Did it in approx 20 min.
- extra-long bolts with wing nuts are supplied with the seat.
- potential problem: It's too early but I'm concerned that the bolts and nuts will corrode since they are made of galvanized steel and not plastic like normal toilet seat bolts. Particularly because I expect the seat will have to be periodically removed for effective cleaning. This remains to be seen.
- I had previously installed a bidet attachment. Now the seat arm rests foul with the bidet control so I've had to install this seat minus the arm rests. Wish Drive Medical will manufacture a raised seat incorporating a bidet attachment one day.
and she can put the lid down.
