If you read the instruction manual, it outlines all the features and how to use the watch very well. I had read other reviews where people complained about the functions not working properly, and I would assume it's b/c they didn't take the time to actually read the instructions on how to use the thing. I like the watch a lot for what I bought it for, and will continue to use it. It might not be the most accurate, and probably wouldn't work well for someone that's running (can't stop to take a reading), but for the price I like it and I was trying to avoid the chest strap HRM. I would recommend it to someone wanting to use it for similar purposes as me.
Very misleading product description. Over and over it is compared to the strap based units, this misleads one to think that it has the same application as a strap based unit. It does not. No where does the product description state that you must touch your fingers to either side of the phone to measure your heart rate. That IS how it works.
As soon as we figured this out we took it off and packed it up to ship it back.
The product description claims to have all these useful measurement outputs, but they are all inaccurate if it can't monitor heart rate continuously as you cycle through your workout. A strap based watch does this. Modern workout includes lots of bursts of exercise and you can't measure your heart rate with this during those bursts, so all of this watches calorie count and % of max heart rate data is useless.
Very disappointing that the description wasted my time and excitement by not just coming out and stating how the monitor works.
I'm a loyal Mio fan and will remain so until some other companies figure out that not all of us want to wear a band around our chests.
I've gotten into spinning and wanted to keep track of how many calories I was burning. This monitor will tell you your heart rate, the percentage of exertion at any time, the calories burned so far in your workout and keeps track of how many calories (out of the 3500 it takes to lose 1 lb) you've burned. There is a red/yellow/green continuum at the top of the heart rate and calories burned screen gives a quick visual of how much you need to push yourself.
To use, simply start the timer at the beginning of your workout and check your heart rate. Then, a few times during the course of your workout, check your heart rate again. Easy as that!
I've had no problems getting a reading. I have found that it's harder to get a reading using my thumb and middle finger than when I use my thumb and index finger. You also have to be wearing the watch for about 5 minutes to get a reading, since a little bit of moisture has to build up between the back and your skin.
