Driven is from Jess's point of view, and we get a glimpse into the life of a girl wracked by the pain of parental selfishness and her own stubborn, fierce independence.
As with all Nowak's books, the characters are as real as your best friend, and the setting is authentic and exciting.
This is a delightful read for me as an adult. I enjoyed watching Jess grow and deal with the challenges of the first romance.
I'vw given copies to my fifteen year old grandchildren and will recommend it others.
Lisa has created an intriguing story of a young girl's struggle to make sense of her lost childhood, her absent father, drunk mother and a constant threat of foster care looming over her as she tries to maneuver around the walls she's built to protect herself. Her stubborn pride keeps her from opening up to the friends and family and turning away the love that she so desperately wants. Not until she gets taken under the wings of two women, race car mechanic, Kasey and Teri Sue, a transplanted race car driver close to her own age, does Jess see that there are other ways to deal with loss and issues around trust. And then there's Cody, who's able to pull down more walls faster than Jess can build them back up and proves his loyalty and love over and over again. In order to allow them all in, she must make the difficult choice to swallow that pride and put the uncertainties of her life to rest.
Excellent writing and full of humor and heart. Great job!
