My absolute favorite movie of all time. A true cinematic masterpiece. Everything about this film is perfection, from the moody atmosphere, to Bernard Hermann's score, to the acting. This a dark film about a man who is lost and slowly devolving into a ticking time bomb. DeNiro is a quiet revelation in this. There is not a dull moment in this film, and every scene builds to its climax. The final scene is haunting, and you realize that Travis is stuck in some sort of Hell for which he can not escape. Scorsese's best film, in my humble opinion.

What can be said about taxi driver that hasn’t been said before? A dark, gritty, and unflinching look at New York in the 70s and into the Dark side of humanity and the inner workings of the lost mind. Basically Paul Schrader exercising his demons that most people will find disturbingly relatable, though few would admit to having this person inside them...well we all do, it’s just that some can’t stare the beast down & instead let it take over.
Aside from all that armchair critic stuff this Blu-ray is particularly good, it’s the best I’ve ever seen this film look with with a nice clean transfer without too much artificial noise reduction, the grain structure is still there so it looks like the “gritty” movie you remember, as it should.
the extras package, spread out over two discs, is more than any fan could realistically ask for, and since it’s currently available for less than $10 it’s a steal.
Highly recommended for anybody who is a fan of 70s filmmaking and isn’t afraid to look at the dark-side of human nature.

The picture quality of this Blu-ray is excellent. Though the age and nature of the film does not lend itself to enormous amounts of fine detail, the film still looks amazing for its age. Minute details (where present) are quite clear, and the color palette shifts seamlessly between the more natural and vivid aspects of Travis' daytime activities to the yellow/green tint of 70's New York nightlife. I found no issues with the audio presentation. The dialogue, music, and sound effects were all crystal clear.
This particular release is loaded with special features. There are many documentaries and tributes, along with the standard trailers, commentaries, etc. A stack of collectibles snapshots was also included in the case, but I have no plans or need to open them. All in all, it's a very comprehensive release, and the quality of the transfer is top-notch. All releases of classic films should be handled with this level of care and thoroughness, because this was well worth the price.
No software update was needed in order to play this Blu-ray on my 2017 model LG Blu-ray player.

If you haven't seen "Taxi Driver" in a few years, seeing it on Blu-Ray will jolt you the way moviegoers back in 1976 must have been jolted when they first saw this. The stunning transfer presents this movie in all it's gritty, violent glory. I've seen this movie numerous times, but again, seeing it in this format brought out all those nuances of New York City that past transfers couldn't deliver...you'll feel like your walking those mean streets yourself. A must for serious fans of seventies American cinema.

"Taxi Driver" is a classic and with good reason. Robert DeNiro plays the lead with a gritty and dark presence. He's shown very ambiguously at first, relatable even. The soundtrack is lovely and the shots are brilliant. The supporting cast is all excellent and the dialogue is very believable and on point (even if it is slightly dated now). While there isn't a lot of action, the moments leading up to it are so tense and dangerous that the action almost comes as a relief as much as a shock. The narration in this story doesn't actually tell you anything that you can't see for yourself. It only tells you want you don't see which is the most effective narration. The film does a great job with visual storytelling and allows you to figure things out for yourself and still leave room for surprises. Also, there are no throwaway scenes. Everything in the beginning matters in the end. It is also the most perfect handling of vigilantism. The violence isn't glorified. You witness everything through an impartial lens that plays no favorites and takes no sides. You decide that, not the movie. One of my favorites ever made.

In my top 5 best movies

Robert de Niro’s Best movie, I first watched this at a time in my life where I could see many similarities between myself and Travis Bickle. The way he perceives the world and his interactions with it and it’s people are akin to anyone who doesn’t or can’t fit in. Martin Scorsese does a really fantastic job in setting the scene, developing the characters and building the story to its crescendo. A masterpiece.

A glimpse of New York’s recent past no one wants to revisit

Not a fan of “real life” portrayals of “ordinary people” type movies so, from that perspective, I would recommend to stay away from this. Though critics gobble this up, I prefer my movies to entertain for very much the same reasons I would go and watch them in theaters. Not to diminish the skills and talents of Mr. De Niro (far from it), but praising this movie is like praising the cook for frying eggs with such depth of character and realism. This is a waste of time and a few quid you don’t want to make.

Some people rave about it - not sure why
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2020Verified Purchase
On the one hand it is well made and well acted (it was headed by one of the world's best actors, after all). And it was very much 'of its time' in cinematography history - i.e. of the 1970s. If you like well-made psycho-dramas then you'll probably applaud this.
Also, it might be seen as exposing the worst of human behaviours / instincts for the sleazebag horrors of what New York and others had largely become by then - and make us react against it.
Or it's a film of debauchery. A psychotic killer on the loose, looking for someone to kill. And of the worse type of exploitation, and lowest of the low attitudes towards others (including a cynical presidential candidate - does that bring anybody to mind). In short, negative and depressing.
Or both.
Overall, for us, it was too cynical and far too sordid. Not one we'll ever watch again.

A Good Scorsese Movie
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2016Verified Purchase
This is one of the Martin Scorsese movie's that you have to see, it is a bit of a slow paced movie but that just gives it time to tell you the story and let you try to understand Robert De Niro's character, and why he feels the way he does, when he looks at his surroundings in New York at that time. If you are not familiar with what I mean then look at movies based in New York in the 1970's and compare them with movies based in New York today, and you can see how much New York has changed. The 1970's been very sleazy, covered in graffiti and crime infested in a lot of areas, compared to how much cleaner New York is today. There is still crime in New York, just like there is in most other big cities around the world, but you can definitely see the difference. This is a good movie and a must see for fans of Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese.
