I am going to start right away with the narration. I haven’t read too many books that were narrated by men but Paul Woodson did an incredible job. He gave Bullet the perfect effect, but was still able to make Finlay sound just as natural (without putting too much girly tone into her).
Melissa’s books make it hard to focus on much other than the characters. One of the biggest pluses for me with this book was how Tinkerbell, Bullet’s dog, was such a big part of the story. Finlay starts out with a fear of dogs, because of an event in her past, so I didn’t expect Tinkerbell to be such a big part of it, even though she is very important to Bullet. But the way everything worked out as the story progressed, I loved Tink just as much as Bullet – and later Finlay – did.
I also really enjoyed the supporting characters in this book. Red – Bullet’s mom – and Dixie – his sister – were two of my favorites. Pretty much the entire Whiskey family. I loved how they all took Finlay into their family like it was the most natural thing in the world. Oh, and Bullet’s brother, Bones. So many characters and I loved them all!
I noticed one thing with this book that hasn’t really come up in the other books I have read of Melissa’s . . . So. Many. Characters. I realized with this book that I am going to have to re-read books as I go, just to absorb everything that Melissa puts into them. These characters have not only their worlds, but they drop into others. The magnitude of it really hit me this time and I can’t wait to dive back into Ty’s world and reconnect with the Bradens ❤
The Whiskey books are advertised as stand-alones, so this book wrapped up really well. Of course, I was left wanting more of these characters, but that’s nothing new. My collection of Melissa’s books continues to grow each time I pick one of them up, get addicted to a new family, and secretly buy three or four new books (shhh – I haven’t told the hubby yet lol).
To sum the book up – just because you think you’re broken, doesn’t always mean you are. And some times the sweetest things are exactly what you need ❤ Finlay and Bullet, I adore you!
Finley is afraid of dogs and wouldn't be caught dead on a motorcycle. (Neither would I) She isn't used to being around bikers and is somewhat jumpy when she's surrounded by the bikers in the Whiskeys' motorcycle club.
What I love most about this book is that there's very little pressure on Finley to get over her fears or change completely just to fit in with the Whiskeys. Bullet (and by extension, his entire family) are very accepting of Finley and her insecurities. This isn't like the movie Grease where they just stick the heroine in tight pants and a leather jacket just to make her more desirable.
Also, Bullet has his own set of insecurities that he has to overcome as well. He's not just this big tough guy who has very little emotion. Like Finley, he's a multi-dimensional character with depth.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I appreciate the depiction of a male with chest hair on the cover. You don't see that much in romance novels.
Bullet is a born protector as much as he was bread to be one by his father. His need to protect has left him with demons, in the form of PTSD, from his time spent in the military. He feels like he’s darkness with no sign of light. Endless hours at the bar and the rest of his spare time spent protecting the town. Well that’s about to change when the ray of sunshine known as Finley comes to help expand the Whiskey Bros. Bar. Finley is the light Bullet’s soul craves and she’s the light driving him wild. They both have things from their past that feel too hard to get over.
“I thought I was broken, but I think broken is the wrong word for people like us. I think we were affected and hurt, but not broken. Broken implies that we need to be fixed, that we’re not good enough to be loved the way we are, or we’re lacking in some way.” Finlay Wilson
I think lollipop has become my favorite nickname.
Finlay moved back to Peaceful Harbor to reconnect with her sister and her her catering business off the ground. She thinks she'll never love again after her boyfriend died alone in battle. But when she meets Bullet they are drawn together.
I loved this book so much. It's beyond opposites attracting. It's the all encompassing healing power of love. It's the balm that soothes the human spirit and fills the emptiness in the soul. You will cheer Bullet on as he becomes the man that sweet Finlay can't live without. Cannot wait for the next book!
